Nigga doesn't mean what it used to, we all know that. I think it's definently wrong for white people to say it, but hey, blacks can ignorantly refer to eachother like that if they please. Alls I know is, sometimes in songs it sounds good, I have to admit that.

...he said everybody wants to be black but don't nobody want to be black...

i think it was Paul Mooney who said that. he also said it on a sketch on The Chappelle Show. aint really on topic but blah.......

as far as the "N" word. just about everybody i know doesnt really pay no mind to it. the hip-hop community helped take the negative meaning out of the word and now it is used very loosely. i can understand older people gettin upset when the word is used around them, but all my boys and even adults i know dont really give the word that much thought anymore, but maybe its just because i dont know any white people that actually say it and its probably best i dont. but i'm not black (not sayin that the word should be associated wit black people) im hispanic and i use the word alot cause i dont use it negative nor do i even think of it that way when im sayin it. and i think no matter what race you are its probably gonna be really hard to sing along to your favorite hip-hop songs and not come across the word.

I have never been comfortable droping the "N" bomb around anyone else other than Fam. Even if it is used in appropiate conversation, I still feel ill because of the history behind what has happened behind the word.

I understand using it with no foul intent behind it....but why not just say something else?

Because you don't want too. I understand that cuz that's why I say it. I've heard my girlfirend's Dad call his Wife's dead Mom a nigga (usually joking around in a Yo-Momma contest). I call my own Dad nigga...but when I get into certain situations and it comes up, I feel ill. I am the only black person in my office and when Fifty Cent drops the "N" bomb over the radio....I get ill.

"Nigga" is not just a hiphop thing, its a black thing. Just cuz you say nigga doesnt make you hiphop. My whole fam and extended fam use the word nigga in a negative and a positive way. My grandma says nigga. Its just that since hiphop blew up, more people that where not accustom to hearing in that way are hearing it. Hiphop just popularized it. It opened the doors to black culture.

Its so hard to explain it but let me put it like this...its a black thing. We turned it into a positive saying within' the black community. If u are not within this community its negative.

For anyone to use the word nigga to me that is not black is say like those cats that walk around put on fro's paint their faces black and put a big chain around their neck, I think it is a way to make it appear that you are somehow cool, connected and hip in circles, sort of like the last rite of passage someone who is not black can use to seem really hip or in...I don't give a fugg about hip hop culture popularizing the word that's a bunch of bullshitt for anyone to use it as some sort of hip noun, hispanics use ese and I think thats a cool word but I don't think it had any bad roots, I mean go look in the mirror and say it to yourself you'll see how stupid you look and really sound.....LOL

After having consulted with Websters @ dictionary.com...this is what is comes up with:

1.
a. Used as a disparaging term for a Black person: “You can only be destroyed by believing that you really are what the white world calls a nigger” (James Baldwin).
b. Used as a disparaging term for a member of any dark-skinned people.
2.
Used as a disparaging term for a member of any socially, economically, or politically deprived group of people: “Gun owners are the new niggers... of society” (John Aquilino).

[Alteration of dialectal neger, black person, from French nègre, from Spanish negro. See Negro.]

nigger

\Nig"ger\, n. A negro; -- in vulgar derision or depreciation.

nigger

man.... that is the most irritating thing..... people are like "there are white niggers, hispanic niggers, asian niggers..... a nigger is just an ignaorant person..." yeah, sure. when was the last time an entire population of ignorant people was given such a degrading term to describe them? IGNORANT PERSON: any member of the KU KLUX KLAN. my mother looks very...um, well, not black but .. i dont really know to be honest!! she is very exotic to say the least (very deep, olive complexion, green eyes, very thick, wiry hair...anyone out there look like that? maybe you can tell me what she is!!) but people have reffered to her with that word so many times i have lost count, and no one was reffering to ignorance and every one said it to piss me off, which worked like a charm. my baby sister was half black, and she passed from SIDS as an infant and my own father (we had different fathers) had called her a "nigger baby" before she was even born. the way i see it, if that word has caused me that much pain and rage INDIRECTLY, it must be truly insulting to the black man, woman, and child who has to deal with it DIRECTLY, every day of their lives, and it is is an imbecile of epic proportions who believes that that word means anything OTHER than a destructive, hateful slur towards blacks. whixh brings me to that dictionary definition, #2, well, whoever john aquilino is, he is an idiot of the highest order, because that is a very pale comparison to make (no pun intended) and james baldwin seems to be on the low end of the comprehension spectrum (i.e., he REALLY doesnt get it) and.. forget it.

what about other slurs aimed at other people groups? of course, most of these do not carry the stigma and history of "the n word", but it does seem like there is a double standard, at least where i live, because MANY blacks here in so. california seem to think that it is ok to make remarks towards other groups. case in point, a black friend of mine told me i was a disgrace because i didnt speak spanish ( i am roughly 1/4 spanish, however the physical traits seem to have taken over!) and that it was sad that i didnt speak the language. so i said, well, do you speak african? he was seriously heated over that remark. . . . because for some reason, "it was different" .... ok, how? i have never been to spain, or set foot on mexican soil (since every brown skin person without slanted eyes in southern california is mexican), just as he had never been to africa.................. anyhow, this was simply the example that came to mind..... so what about homosexuals? is it o.k to call them faggots? is it ok to refer to women as bitches and hos? i know that this issue (the "n" word) extends well beyond hip hop, but the hip hop community is all militant and up in arms about that word and racism, and profiling, and rightfully so, but is OK to say faggot and bitch and ho and be like "thats not meant that way, its really meant this way" or about how it flowed well, or whatever..... i just think that we all need to look in the mirror when we have these types of offenses, because we are all (likely) guilty of a similar offense to someone else at some point... but we have a million excuses as to why it was ok for us to say what we said, and to who we said it to or about, or how this word is worse for this reason........... so why is that?

BeatOff is right about the dictionary meaning of the word "nigga."

but, although its original meaning was supposed to be an offensive one, niggas started calling other niggas, "niggas." Today, "nigga" is used when adressing both friends and enemies. And lately it has been used from black people toward white people.

This leads me to conclude that the word "nigga" is dead, in a sense. Few people use the word with its original meaning in mind.

IN RESPONSE TO THE ORIGINAL POST...the reason why you hear the word "nigga" in Hiphop so much is because many of the Hiphopers are black.

everyone should chill. "nigga" is just a word.

peace niggas

inrctyhoodmusic Peace & Blessing for motivating a positive subject like this in the forum!

Let's break this down shall me!

Scenario one: Nigga is just a word don't be so sensitive
Answer: We have become so desensitized and brainwashed by this society that even the most historically degrading word to black people in this world has become accepted very greatly and defended in the year 2003 BY BLACK PEOPLE!

Ask different people from other nationalities and cultures is it okay to use degrading words to describe themselves and I bet 99 percent of them will say HELL NO!!!

Words are not JUST words, and you so called rappers and producers on this board should understand that, just like music isn't just music "Music has it's own spirit and meaning to it" which is why we are all here, we love the art.

For a rapper, lyricist, poet a word is not just a word it has it's own energy it's own spirit and feeling when it comes off the lips.

It is widely accepted to the WHOLE FUCKIN WORLD that the word "nigga" is derogatory and please don't give me that shit about turning it into something positive, because why would you want to turn shit into diamonds. Why would you want to. Innovate brothas and come up with new positive things instead of holding on to your former slave master's vocabulary.

I know most of these "thugs" are going to come back and say who cares I'm a nigga and you a nigga or it means never ignorant getting goals accomplished or whatever, but if that is so WHAT HAVE U ACCOMPLISHED- YOUR STILL IGNORANT-YOU HAVE NOTHING POSITIVE TO SAY-THE WHOLE WORLD thinks your ignorant for using derogatory language to refer to oneself-how stupid can you be, even if it is just a word to you they don't think so, and neither do the thousands of black people that have sacrificed their own life on the battlefield dying over simple civil rights so that most of these "thugs" can now enter into million dollar studios and record ignorant ass shit and not give a damn about it. People died over this-respect your own people respect your elders-respect your ancestors or your doomed by the energy you put out.

CAN I GETTA AMEN? to steal a quote from 'hoodmusic...."somebody buy this man a drink".....

all in all i still think that we are all guilty of this same sin towards other groups..... but i for one would like to see a shift in the mindset of blacks in using this word, because it to me is very sad to see it used so freely.....

of course i am one who finds stereotypes of all groups to be hilarious at times, so what am i talking about? and why am i online? "mexicans" cant afford computers! i think i have a lawn to mow and a goat to cook..... CHEEBO!
