Who do you think are the 5 most influential producers in Rap ?

By "most influential" ,I do not mean the most popular or those you like best... I'm talking about those who really brought new visions/techniques to beat making.

My top 5 would be :

-Marley Marl : was almost single-handedly responsible for bringing the sampler into hip hop production...

-45 king : one of the first crate diggers to get some respect, well before Prince Paul, the Beatnuts and Pete Rock...

-Dj Premier : one of the first Hip Hop producers to popularize jazzy beats

-Dr Dre : created the blue print for the Gangsta rap/G-Funk sound

-Mantronix : inspired many producers with his "electronic" beat making approach

I'm very interested to know your opinion...

peace,

PHIL

DR. DRE(usher a whole new era)

PREMO(Influence a whole 2 generations with his drum and samples)

Large Professor (sent MFs running to the lab, influence the influencers )

Marley Marl-sampling pioneer,

Puffy( you got to admit his influence on the current sound of hip hop and the game in general, even though he probally can't even cut on a MP)

Hmmn, you guys mentioned all the old visionaries, which I would have mentioned too for the same reasons given...Premo, Dre, Puffy's crew, Marley Marl...only difference in my selection, who Phil only mentioned as a side comment, is Prince Paul. His productions stand out more to me than 45 King's does.
Anyway, I then thought about adding the new visionaries but can only come up with 3...

Timbaland, Neptunes and in the underground genre, El-P.
...I guess others would also add names like Just Blaze, Kanye West, Mannie Fresh etc.

of course el-p should be on this list
dan the automator too (if only for dr. octogone and deltron 3030).

And what about rza? I really likes what he does. And not just dirty beats. When he first did dirty beats, he was near the only one. He did synth stuff way before any other cats. He should have some credits too.

I would like to say DJ Shadow too. Entroducing... is a milestone even if he (in my opinion) ain't always the greatest producer.

The most debatable of my choice would be madlib. I very like him. Call me a cheap ass backpacker but to me Quasimoto-the unseen is a classic album.

what???? no Jay Dee? this guy was a major contributor to the Tribe Called Quest sound, not to mention his work with common, the roots, slum village, d'angelo, he is a major pioneer of that soulful, philly vibe.

timbaland hasnt recieved much love either! not that i like the current state of hip hop, but the sound that timbaland innovated has been either bitten or formed the base for the style of many of todays hits. Missy Elliot, one of the supposedly great (she irritates me to no end....) innovators of hip hop (whatever) owes a large art of her success to her collaberations with Timbaland. Alliyah, one of the VERY few female RnB artists of the last decade of any real substance (mary j is the only one that tops her in my book..) has Tim to thank for the soundtrack.. look at "one in a million", "are you that somebody", and "try again".... all three of these employ a very different sound than the others, and all were very ground breaking. and what about genuine? he falls off the second he takes a break from tim as his main producer, but there is no denying that his albums had great music on them until now. Tim is the most influencial of the last 5-6 years, hands down.

the thing is, a truly great producer will do far more than his own little camp, and be able to revolutionize the art form in some way. there has to be a contribution like this, and there has to be longevity. for this reason the neptunes have to be included, because they have been at it for the last decade (at least) and in the last threee years have become the bigest overall force in production, having locked the radio down on multiple formats with multiple artists from entirely different types of music, including the sub-genres within hip hop. common, jay z, snoop dogg, clipse, justin timberlake, brittany spears.... hell they even gave the teen pop icons of the last 7 years a makeover that made them acceptable to the hip hop crowd!!!! (ok, so what if the "hip hop" crowd is the same white, middle class suburban kids?)

i dont believe pete rock should be included among the great influencers in hip hop history, because of his lack of across-the-board impact. Premier does, however, and by quite a long margin! EVERYONE wants to rock a premier track. backpackers, thugs, pretty boys, even rock stars... every hip hop artist who is serious would love to rock a premier track. not as their single, not for their video, but for the sake of lacing this guys music. its almost as if you havent arrived until you have spit at least 16 over his beats. plus he has shown a nack for bringing out the very best in an artist. nas has always been at his absolute best over premier, biggies "ready to die" was laced thouroghly with his music, jay's reasonable doubt, m.o.p's classic "how about some hardcore" (that was premier, wasnt it?) Mos Def was as sharp as he has ever been over "mathamatics" ...

of course dre has to be included. 19 years, spanning the sound of three decades... the west coast would look very different without this man. this is the guy who has helped bring about two of the biggest stars EVER- in eminem and snoop dogg... as well as being the major piece of deathrow, before pac came along...

thats four, cant think of the fifth... i am all for respecting the originators, but the major artists of the last 15 years have just been mentioned... and the early guys just didnt seem to have the overall impat that these 4 did in their respective generations. of course, as times change, so does acceptance and visability, so that is purely subjective.

lol.... sorry Guervy!!! "you know how i do, i gots ta keep it real, nah mean??" haha.. hey am i the only one who thinks that hi tek was supposed to be one of hip hops "super producers" by now? just a few years ago it looked like he was poised to make some serious noise, and its like the spot the kanye and just hold should have been his the same way...

Yo i forgot about jay-d, and hi-tek belongs up there too...Even if Pete Rock on tha other hand maybe didnt have across-tha-board-impact, - what ever that means??? Im assuming how many units he sold versus tha actual influence he had on a hiphop era?......But, PeteRock was dam influential in his day and cats have been emulatin that dude for who knows how fucking long!!?

nah, i mean, where was his impact? of course his units wouldnt match up with even modest sales these days. i mean, where was his impact? who is emulating him? what era did he create? the early nineties, when he was at his best, he still didnt have the overal impact on mtv that dre had.. he didnt usher in a new era, he didnt create (or popularize) a new style, and the era where he "ruled" was the same era that Jay Dee was busy laying the musical foundation for Tribe, who was and is among the most influencial groups ever. this isnt to knock him, because he is one of the greats, but he just doesnt measure up to the other guys that i mentioned, impact wise. i know rza counts him as an influence, i count him as one of mine, but he just doesnt belong in the "elite of the elite" category, the same as rza. hi tek doesnt belong, but he should have been truly great by now. outsde of talib/blackstar, he hasnt done much the last few years. he did blackstar, like 5-6 tracks for soundbombing 2, the reflection album, as well as his own album, but nothing major after that! producers aint like mc's; they should have work on a much more regular basis. hi tek SHOULD be among the best around these days- highly sought after, with radio play and underground bangers at the same time, as he is among the VERY few to be able to do both. he just hasnt yet.

Dude you must be crazy if you dont at least see tha impact PeteRock had on hiphop as an equivalant -to say- Jay Dee - which you keep mentioning as if some how he's more influential to hiphops escalating past than PeteRock! And i didnt say he created a new era of hiphop, i said tha actual influence he had on a hiphop era...there is a difference.
I wouldnt be so quick to say there are actual era creaters as well - more so, i would say there are contributers instead. Music isnt like tha bible or some shit, its a give an take situation, where people take from there influences and spawn there own styles and influences of there own.
Tha circle just keeps rotating, and eventaully history seems to repeat its self as it does in just about everything else.
Yo what about J-Swift too!!??......Does anybody even know who that cat is???......Pharcyde ring a bell??.....another slept on giant in tha industry.
(Giant dont = $$Dollar Signs$$)

For me personally:
+ DJ Premier
+ Alchemist (I think he kicked the sampling level up a notch)
+ Dr Dre
+ Just Blaze (The little voices in the songs, he kind of trademarked that as his shit. A whole new style of rap beat... began with Oh Boy)
+ RZA

actually, i am saying that his influence is greater, due to his ongoing contributions as opposed to the not-quite-as-consistant pete rock. i never said that you said anything about him creating a new era.. i was arguing as to why i dont see him among the MOST influential. all that i am saying is that as far as MOST influencial, pete rock doesnt belong in that elite category. everyone is influential to an extent, hell chingy is influential somehow! the other thing is that i have repeatedly mentioned pete rock as being one of the great producers and so i OBVIOUSLY see his impact, so i dont know why you keep saying that...?

yeah, but you straight up said -

nah, i mean, where was his impact? of course his units wouldnt match up with even modest sales these days. i mean, where was his impact? who is emulating him? what era did he create?

obviously we have conflicting views, i dont think specifically that tha nominees you chose as people for your top five dont belong up there though...But there also wasnt any parameters set as to - from what time tha producers came from? Or, Is tha producer a top seller and has he changed tha world?...nah not that either. - just straight up your top five list of tha most influential producers in rap....So theres mine. Ive seen other people list producers like: Alchemist, or Just Blaze...and someone else put El-P up there too - - - Point is, I acknowledge tha influence/impact they have made on hiphop as well and i wouldnt say they dont belong to be in tha realm either though...some of these producers have made waves without even knowing it yet and others do. Its like E40: That guy should get a award and be voted like second next to Snoop for creatin' his own fucking vocabulary!...His slang has been in hiphop for such a long time now, people dont even know it came from him - maybe people that are too young - or havent done there homework. (Dont get shit twisted here either...im not directing this at you specifically and saying your too young or some shit.)
Plus, i would put someone like Dre...but everybody already knows tha impact that dudes made on hiphop by just turning on tha tube everyday..i wanted to list some people that some of you may know right off tha bat, and maybe some of you dont.
Shit!...I aint no guru, i just wanted to open tha spectrum a little more.

no, there werent any set parameters, but it makes sense to have a reasoning, something to measure it by. so i could have said, "pete rock, hi tek, premier, kanye west and alchemist" because those are my favorites right there, but for me to say they are the 5 "all time most influencial" based on my personal tastes would be pure ignorance on my part. i cant stand the neptunes, i like timbaland like half the time, and dre isnt exactly my favorite. the only ones that i actually like AND listen to from my list was jay dee and premier... and i do think that for an ALL TIME list, it is a good idea to take an objective look at who i choose.... and when comparing one guys impact to anothers, how is it wrong to say that for an ALL TIME list, someone doesnt belong?
