one thing i can say either way is add different velocity to some of the hits so it doesnt sound like something kraftwerk would do...unless thats your goal

conga rolls are my favorite but its nice to have some really good snare rolls for crunk music and kick rolls are nice for east coast type shit. Its all about varying up the roll so you hit on beats and off beats in an original type form

Oh yeah, what kind of snare should I use to make the roll sound "clean"? A short and snappy one?

like Smith said, randomize the velocity of each hit in the roll... put a tiny amount of shuffle on them, also... give it that real drummer feel.

layer the sound a lil bit, with like a couple snares, and have some of them off on some hits of the roll. and yea, shuffle.
