Marijuana is one of the world’s most commonly used illegal drugs. There are approximately 300 million users worldwide and 28 million users in the United States alone.

Marijuana comes from a plant called “Cannabis sativa.” The chemical found in this plant that produces the altered states of consciousness is called “delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol” or “THC.” Whether smoked as a cigarette, or cooked into baked goods like brownies or cookies or brewed like a tea, marijuana use causes: relaxation, reduced coordination, reduced blood pressure, sleepiness, disruption in attention, an altered sense of time and space. In high doses, marijuana can also cause hallucinations, delusions, impaired memory and disorientation.

Now, according to a new White House Office of National Drug Control Policy report, teens using marijuana put themselves at higher risk for serious mental problems including worsening depression, schizophrenia, anxiety and suicide.

The report, called Teen Marijuana Use Worsens Depression: An Analysis of Recent Data Shows “Self-Medicating” Could Actually Make Things Worse, sustains that teens using marijuana increase their risk of developing a mental disorder by 40 percent. Teens who use marijuana at least once a month over a yearlong period are three times more likely to have suicidal thoughts than those who don’t use the drug.

However, the most consistent finding of the report was that using marijuana to alleviate the symptoms of depression puts teenagers at a high risk of becoming addicted to pot and increases their chances to develop mental health problems, such as an advanced form of depression, anxiety, as well as suicide.

Nearly 2 million teens felt depressed over the past year, data showed and depressed teens were more than twice as likely as others to have used marijuana during that period.

Marijuana is not the answer when feeling depressed. People’s thinking that they can run away from depression by smoking pot are making a big mistake and worsen their situation, sustains John P. Walters, director of National Drug Control Policy. Their only solution to feel better is to seek medical help.

Marijuana among American teens has decreased 25 percent since 2001, which is encouraging. According to the report, above 2.3 million children currently use marijuana at least once a month.

More teens could escape serious health problems if they received the necessary support from their parents or psychologists. In fact, parents are urged to recognize any sign indicating their children are using marijuana and try to seek help for it.

Immediate help could save children from becoming addicted to other drugs. Long term studies of high-school students and their patterns of drug use show that very few young people use other illegal drugs without first trying marijuana.

For example, the risk of using cocaine is much greater for those who have tried marijuana than for those who have never tried it. Using marijuana puts children and teens in contact with people who are users and sellers of other drugs. So there is more of a risk that a marijuana user will be exposed to and urged to try more drugs.

To better determine this risk, scientists are examining the possibility that long-term marijuana use may create changes in the brain that make a person more at risk of becoming addicted to other drugs, such as alcohol or cocaine. Further research is needed to predict who will be at greatest risk.

LOL, some of these arguments I'll go along with, like you cant get high to escape problems , thats just how it works. But I think people have a choice as to weather they are fine with just doing a J or sniffin away their lives with blow.
I mean if the former didnt get you right then you may not want to do anything in that case.

Its bullshit, me and my friends have been smoking the strong stuff since we were at school and not one of us have had mental issues as a result, I have known people that have claimed to have had paranoid delusions due to smoking, but I think it only affects those already susceptible to mental disorders.
As the use of high grade hydroponic marijuana(skunk/chronic/smelly/medical marijuana) has increased, obviously so has the increase in the people susceptible to disorders smoking it and hence more mental disorders.
All I can say is if it makes you think everyone is out to get you dont smoke it, but if like me it does nothing but maybe make you a little lazy and not get much done, then just smoke in moderation.
In a free world people should have the choice to do what they see fit to themselves as long as it doesnt have a negative impact on others. But yet it isnt a free world. I have noticed that as the police have cracked down on canabis, the use of class a cocaine has increased dramatically. I know what drug Id reather be taking, canabis - its natural, you see what you get, its not so fucking expensive and I have never ever had any paranoid delusions or haluccinations while stoned, except for when I heard music in my head after smoking double zero hash, but then thats something else.

Prozac causes teen suicide, but yet they prescribe it like candy, do you really think the govt has your best interests at heart here?

LoL, its only a small contradiction.
But let me explain, the only people I know that have had problems all live in Harlow, a place with a massive SmithKline Beecham plant, and a massive Merck, Sharpe & Dohme plant. Personally I blame them for letting shit get out into the air in Harlow, some sort of medical experiment bullshit. Call me a paranoid delusionist, but my fears are not based on anything just in my imagination.
Truthseekers are often called paranoid delusionists to discredit them, it isnt a delusion, its the facts presented on govt documents in black and white with signatures. These things happen all the time.

Crux of message:

- If you're a teenager that is already suffering from a mental disorder (depression, etc.) then marijuana increases the risk of negative reactions, like thoughts of suicide, etc. Instead of smoking marijuana to self-medicate, go to a psychiatrist so they can prescribe you a drug that has side-effects that may or may not be worse than marijuana's, but you will be charged significantly more for your treatment.

- Did they say anything about teenagers that are mentally healthy? What are the effects?

(shakes head)

Somebody back me up on this.

I remember seeing a TV story on a Pfizer plant in Ireland that made Viagra. The older male inhabitants of the town said they didn't have ED any more. They joked: "It must be the plant nearby, they're putting good pollution into the air." The plant was billowing something into the air, I'll tell you that

It was funny-- a town full of people with hard-ons.

Those effects apply to inept minds, control your mind control your pain..I've been smoking weed almost everyday for like 8 years now give or take a few months breaks in-between, as long as you stay physically active your brain will continue to produce endorphins, it probably does lower your dopamine levels. I know doctors, lawyers who smoke weed on a regular basics. I wouldn't encourage teenagers to smoke weed, due to the fact the cognitive levels of the brain are still developing. Most people start smoking out of curiosity or because of peer pressure. I read that marijuana in some users produces amotivational syndrome, if you was lazy before you started smoking pot, do you think that smoking pot will make you ambitious WTF!. It makes me wonder what people they're running these test on. Always pointing all the negatives and never the positives.. It helps people who have cancer chemotherapy, AIDS, epilepsy, glaucoma and multiple sclerosis to say the least. You just have to be a responsible toker that's how I see it....

I dont know about the immediate affect on teens but run into some old heads that did heavy weed smoking, I mean heavy in their early years into 30's , you can tell that it does affect ones mental state, 3 easy things you can notice are forgetfulness , moodiness and extreme paranoia long term its sorta like anything else that you might do in excess when you are young but pay for it later...I really dont think weed is any worse than alcohol or even cigarettes though.

just what i wanted to say, weve had teenagers jumping out of hotel after taking some shrooms and now they blaim shroom but they should inform how to take them and why you shouldnt, its all up to education no matter rediculous that may sound.

dont blame the drugs, blame the users dont be daft and expose yourself to a risk.

Otherwise, if you're not confident in driving a car (i.e.) then would you drink and drive...

I have an uncle who smoked himself schitzoid, the dude smoked trees like i do now but he was raised very differently to put it nicely (not sanely for someone his age back then).

i would like to add that the body at a point in age cant handle strong or lots of thc, same for alcahol of course but ive seen 30+ peeps go slightly mental/paranoia because they still felt like partying up like 16 year olds...it wont work for no one trust me, you must settle back at one point and better to recognize this before you do get para..

i still smoke trees though but im not 30 lol, but anyway, recognize or wreckonize the issue is that teens dont learn to be responsible and therefor dont know consequences where i, from a liberal authority to drugs have had great schooling in what or not to do and even the major drug headed friends i know have been keen with the stuff they take because they know how to handle, how much to take and when not to take or when to stop...whether that alcohol or drugs...it dont matter...population on planet earth has always drank and drugged themselves in the name of medicin, beliefs or culture untill western society abused that knowledge because...well thats what this society does sometimes.
