Oh...I thought you were referring to Rolands "SP's". No on the E-mu SP-1200 you had to make your adjustments on your turntables BEFORE you sampled anything. Remember the hand held bpm meters? lol, those were the days.

Yeah I agree, you can't look at them as being classic because they are so far ahead of their time. The SP808 came out waaaay before the MPC2000 and the 2000 can't do half of what the 808 did. The only negative thing about the 808 was those big @$$ zip drive cards during a time when everybody else was going to cd's. As far as function, I'll put an SP808 up against a MPC4000 anyday. But you gotta remember, the 808 was Rolands answer to the MPC1000.

Why not use recycle then?

Also don't misunderstand, I am not saying it should not be added. I just don't see how this makes the Maschine bad or unusable? SP's don't have time stretch, early MPC's don't either.

Never said it wasn't bad or unusable.

But a lot of people went from FL Studio to Maschine (including myself). We were able to time stretch a sample in 2 seconds if it was needed.

For example...

I chopped this ILL loop. Thing about it is, there's some variations in the length in the bars (and I went deep into the waveform to ensure the most precise chop possible). After chopping it, I find that it is off in terms of the actual length...it's not a huge difference but enough to cause an issue when locking into a particular tempo. Now a timestretch function can correct those lil anomalies and increase the speed of your workflow.

Yes I could use recycle. I could even use FL Studio...But if I'm going to do that....I might as well make the beat in FL Studio.......then why did I buy Maschine (well I kinda didn't buy it) if I'm going to just go back to FL to make beats?

I understand the 1200 and the MPC didn't have timestretch...and that's fine, those were more hardware than software....The Maschine is more software, since it is based on a software program on your computer, controlled with a unique MPCesque controller.

At the end of the day, I will find a way to make this work for me, just like I did with FL....

Sounds to me like you need to forget workflow and time stretch your samples in FL or Recycle BEFORE assigning them to pads. idk, I'm just not all that big on truely bangin out your actual beat and then go back, quantize and make corrections or whatever afterwards when you can do all of that on the fly in FL. Matter of fact, if you're half way decent with your mouse clicks, and accurate with your chops in edison, you don't even need to quantize at all. Don't get me wrong, I like getting my ideas on pads eventhough it isn't a must, but you can be MUCH more creative that way. I guess it boils down to what fits the operator the best. Still, not being able to time stretch is a big problem that is a must fix for what we do.

Even when I do small chops and arrange them, I sometimes stretch them to be a certain length so there's a better transition and sounds smoother... I don't use Edison to chop my samples..I use(d) Cool Edit Pro...I got the pads so I could be more creative. I think with a program this powerful, there should've been time stretching added to it at the onset.....I don't even care much for the VST support as much as I thought I would, since I could just play some shit out in PT if I really need another sound.

don't wait for time stretch. however, you'll be able to load vst, so there should be work arounds.

on a side note, i always loved cool edit's time stretch function, where you could just stretch a clip to make it fit the bar, so you could always fill gaps.

it's in the multi tracker. you can activate time stretching by clicking on the clock symbol. i used to chop loops with cmd+k and then stretch them. you can then resave the chops or slices with a right-click and click "save sound as individual sample" or something like that, don't remember. i'm talking about audition 1.5 though.

cool, i'll check that out. I know it won't help me as far as workflow but I still want to check it out. I guess the same would apply using it with Maschine. I just don't get the thought process when they were designing Maschine and not having a easy time stretch function. I mean thats one of the single most important features of what we do.

it's worth checking out, cause the stretching function is easy to use and it sounds good. it takes quite some stretching before it starts jittering (compared to *cough* other companies' stretching algorithms)
you can't use it in maschine though, since CE has no vst interface. i'm already looking for a simple sound stretch vst for that purpose.

I think FL Studio's time stretch is awesome....I've never used CE's time stretch...I've always used it to only chop samples....and it is so easy to use....
