I must have phrased my questions wrong. I understand the 2 modes are different. What Im trying to find out is if its possible to leave Maschine in MIdi Mode and have everything custom mapped so that it still works perfectly with the plugin but also allows transport control as well.

These are two different modes completely, you have to use Maschine to fully grasp it. There is no amount of midi assignment that will allow the integration with Maschine the way it is, it's really a work of art as you can do so much in Maschine from the controller.

When you use it as a plugin, you have all the same functions as you do when standalone, the ONLY thing you can't do is stop the sequencer from playing, that's it. You can still turn record on and off (in maschine not the daw), you can still use all the knobs and pads, still use all the functions just like normal...it's just a slave to your daw so you can't actually stop it from playing with the play button.

If you already start and stop your daw manually now, there really is no difference, at first I was very much against it lol...and ONLY used Maschine in standalone mode...but when I thought about it...I wasn't controlling my daw transport before with anything but my space bar lol...so it wasn't a big deal. I plan to get a new midi keyboard, one with transport controls, either that or I'll get a fader port since I use Studio One....

It's really not that big of a deal and trust me I was one of the biggest critics of this.

Yes it will be cool if they add some way to control this WHILE controlling Maschine...but the fact is you can setup custom templates in the midi mode with the controller editor.

I have one setup for Ableton, I can switch back and forth from controlling abletons transport, volume, pan, sends, and track arming for my other vsts, then switch back to Maschine mode and bang out with that.

If this is the only thing you feel is stopping you, then don't let it lol...it's really not that serious. Just hit that space bar lol.

I can dig where your coming from Joe, but at the same time....the fact that your already considering investing in another midi controller just to obtain transport controls doesn't sound that attractive to a first time buyer thats looking for an "all-in-one" solution to the workflow from an external sampling/sequencing box. At the same time, i can see what your saying about only having to press the spacebar. But thats one of my pet-peeves with computer sequencing if you dont have a controller to streamline that process. And since thats sort of the point of Maschine IMO, i dunno....makes me wanna wait personally.

I never use it but I think Logic has assignable midi functions. My Axiom transport buttons did not work initially and then I went into the prefs and assigned them.

The main think I wanted out of this is the mute groups. If you have a midi controller that looks like the MPC, 16 pads, and you can control Ultrabeat, that is pretty close to MPC like function to me. The only thing I have not taken the time to learn is the mute groups. If I find mute groups in Ultrabeat, I might pass on the Maschine.

Although I do think it makes a pretty cool midi controller as opposed to my big ass Axiom 61.
Not sure if UltraBeat itself has an option for mute groups, but I know logics sampler does...all you have to do is assign a group and then set the appropriate voice count.

**EDIT**
Looked in the manual. Looks like you can do this pretty easily. I printed out the page you need.

Comparing maschine to trigger finger is like comparing a steak dinner to sloppy joes.

hold up, feverishly looking around...confused look on my face, looking left, looking right, up, down...can't find one thread about anyone having problems or confusion on the sloppy joe trigger finger. :)~ WAIT! WHATS THIS!?!?!? This is a thread about a confusing steak dinner, NEVERMIND, my bad!

Seriously, I don't wanna just kick out the money on it if its not worth every penny. The Trigger Finger is cheap but worth every penny, the MV is so nice that I want to send Roland another grand on top of what it cost...yeah right! but its that good. So for me, the Maschine is just something new, not something that I need, thats why Im tripping over it like I am BUT I know that you wont endorse something so hard that you dont truely believe in, therefore I'll have one by this summer, but once again...since its you, I gotta give you a hard time. :)~

You know I owned a Trigger Finger for a long time and loved it, I always like the pads on my mpc2000xl better than anything else. But if I had to choose between trigger finger an maschine it is not even a question. It just feels great. I have since sold my trigger finger. I have an Axiom and maschine. So good to go.

trust me I feel you, . If you press shift+control you can control the transports in your daw. I've been asking them to make it a one button toggle instead of two button press. I'm not considering another midi controller just because of Maschine, I have a 25 key and I want a bigger one with 61 keys, most of them have transports on them...so If I don't want to toggle, I'll just use that. That's all I'm saying :)

Maschine is more than a midi controller, it's hard to understand unless you use it. When you're using Maschine as a plugin...the controller is dedicated to controlling Maschine...not your daw. If you want it to control your daw you switch it into control mode with the shift button.

I'm a huge advocate for some type of workaround to let Maschine send midi messages to the daw when you're using it as a plugin, so you can use the transports....but since it's not a simple midi controller, I'm not sure how they will do it.

Funny...I use my keyboard for everything....the MPD isn't needed...

the pad controllers aren't that good in my opinion....

They even have a maschine VST..that's crazy..you get the sexy sounds that it comes with too...

yeah....Maschine operates as both a standalone app and as a plugin, just like many other software instruments.

Word, me too. Why have different controllers when you can have the one?
Ill never buy an MPD, I dont see the point. As for maschine thats a little more tempting, but I really dont think its necessary, and with my budget being what it is right now, Im not getting one in the forseeable future.

Word.......But I would love to have one to see if that would improve my production...

It seems that I'm at the point where instead of learning new equipment, find new ways to improve what I put out with what I have, I don't feel limited at all...but sometimes I wish I had some dope piece of hardware like the maschine or even an mpc...

Maschine makes me come up with 4 to 6 beat loops per evening, where previously I would have made 1 or 2. it's the work flow plus the fun factor that makes it so useful. is it worth the money, compared to a trigger finger/mpd + DAW? Yes it is. Is it the answer to all questions? Not yet. Do you NEED it ? Depends, but once you go there, I suppose you won't come back, because making beats with this thingy is just too easy.

yes you can....I seen it done this weekend. I cant tell you step by step but if your a logic user it can be done through setting up the environment to havr maschine communicate with logic thru an IAC channel. After u get that up you can uses the transport functions AND assign hot keys to the pads.
