Going to NYC April 18 - 20

I am going to be visiting NYC during those dates and I was wondering what you all think I should try to accomplish there production wise and networking wise. Are there any good music shops I can visit for gear, vinyl, or just to meet other people who are interested in music production. Are there any events going on during that time?

What would you do as a upcoming producer while in NYC for three days?

well, there is a number of things, u just missed the brooklyn hip hop festival which was the 6-15th

But u can bascially pick up a village voice, and they will have everything that is going on, just hit up a local show or lounge and start talking. Ft, greene and park slopes are pretty good for stuff like that....

Trust me, EVERYBODY is a producer here

Thanks for you all's responses. Village voice, allright. I am looking to check out a local show. Basically, once I get my music on a CD (demo), I would like to move to NYC. The thing I would like to accomplish on this trip is making sure NYC is a place I would want to live. So, I would like to check out the music production scene and see how it will benefit and marry my goals.

Other cities are an option for me, but I always enjoy NYC, so I was like, "What the hey, I'll think it over seriously and move there."

This is only semi-related, but I didn't want to start an entirely new thread since we're already on the topic of "the music scenes" of various cities. I'll be heading off to college soon. Which of these two regions do you all feel has a stronger hip-hop scene going on: Boston or the Bay Area (SF)?

Hi im the new girl here and just wanted to make a quick comment.

Which of these two regions do you all feel has a stronger hip-hop scene going on: Boston or the Bay Area (SF)?

We are in boston/springfield and I can say the scene is really growing and the industry is taking notice. The area has some really good producers here and everyone right now is really trying to work togeather to create a buzz. There are tons or good artists and nationally known dj's (clinton sparks, static selectah, geespin, karupt, jaycee o, ect...) in the area and they do alot for the local scene

WOW NYC.
The place is its own country comprised of every other nation on earth.
Shit makes your heart beat faster and time seems to move faster.\Great town been there once and it wasnt for music so I didnt get to get into it.
If you can make it there you can make it anywhere, and when I was there the subway tunnels were full of those that didnt.
Absolutely fabulous and dangerous.

dont get me wrong living here is cool, but it aint all that.... Alot of it is HYPE, like for example when people here brooklyn they think hood projects etc..
which is bullshit, large areas of brooklyn are suburban(williamsburg) and other areas are full of rich white people(park slope)

moral of the story, its one thing to visit, its another to live here, plus u better have a back up plan casue the cost of living here is ridiclous...

i feel u guys, i go to NY every summer and i love it there, just because i am not in a big city like that, i mean i have them around me baltimore and DC but its not the same. I am graduating college this semester and i am thinking of moving prob. to brooklyn because it wont be as expensive then living in manhattan. but i need to find a job there first before i actually move there, but i cant wait!!!!! u guys prob think i am crazy, lol

Out of the two, the Bay Area's independent scene is one of the strongest in the nation,
Boston is on the come-up and has always had artists that made noise from outta the city,
but you could be in the middle of a "hot" city for music and still not get things rollin',
but if you are the type to network and most importantly you have good product, then the chances of bumping into somebody that can help you in a "music city" increases tenfold.

brooklyn is expensive as fuck nowadaws too, casue all the white folks are moving from manhattan driving the price up, you gotta leave deeeeep in BK or way out in queens to get a good deal...

Bx (Bronx) is the cheapest out here... Bk is second only to Manhattan in rent prices. Regular gas is $2.90 a gallon right now, and risin. have ur metrocard ready...lol
