Black Leaders Outraged at Board Game

PHILADELPHIA - Cheap Trick Avenue instead of Boardwalk? Hernando's Chop Shop instead of Reading Railroad?

Black leaders are outraged over a new board game called "Ghettopoly" that has "playas" acting like pimps and game cards reading, "You got yo whole neighborhood addicted to crack. Collect $50."

Black clergymen say the game, the brainchild of a Pennsylvania man, should be banned, and have called for a boycott of Urban Outfitters unless the company stops selling Ghettopoly in its chain of clothing stores.

Urban Outfitters has not publicly commented on the issue, and did not return a call seeking comment on Wednesday.

"If we are silent on this issue there is more of this type to come," the Rev. Robert P. Shine Sr., president of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia & Vicinity, said at a sidewalk rally Wednesday in front Urban Outfitters' corporate headquarters in Philadelphia.

Shine displayed the game board, with properties including Westside Liquor, Harlem, The Bronx, and Long Beach City, and squares labeled Smitty's XXX Peep Show, Weinstein's Gold and Platinum, and Tyron's Gun Shop.

Players draw "Hustle" and "Ghetto Stash" cards with directions like, "You're a little short on loot, so you decided to stick up a bank. Collect $75," and "Steal $$$ if you pass Let$ Roll."

The creator of Ghettopoly, David Chang, did not immediately answer e-mails or phone calls seeking comment about the game.

On his Web site, Chang is unapologetic, and promises that more games — Hoodopoly, Hiphopopoly, Thugopoly and Redneckopoly — are coming soon.

"It draws on stereotypes not as a means to degrade, but as a medium to bring together in laughter," Chang maintains, adding, "If we can't laugh at ourselves ... we'll continue to live in blame and bitterness."

But the Ghettopoly board depicts figures labeled "Malcum X" and "Martin Luthor King Jr." — intentionally misspelled — noted Rev. Glenn Wilson, pastor of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church.

"This is beyond making fun, to use the caricature of Dr. King in this regard," Wilson said. "There's no way that game could be taken in any way other than that this man had racist intent in marketing it."

The Philadelphia black clergy and Men United for a Better Philadelphia were just the latest to protest the game. In Chicago, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Catholic Church, called for a boycott of Urban Outfitters. In Florida, the St. Petersburg and Hillsborough County chapters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (news - web sites) urged the company to stop carrying the game.

"I was outraged. We called Outfitters, we wrote them a letter, we held a press conference, but we've had no response," Pfleger said Wednesday.

so what do you think?

I think people need to relax and stop being so sensitive. It's just a game, and if people actually believe that all Black people sell crack and are in jail, then they have serious problems. Nobody knows how to laugh anymore!

Like in the Freddy vs. Jason movie, there's a scene where what's her name from Destiny's Child says to Freddy, "what kind of faggot wears a sweater like that?" - something like that. Because of the word 'faggot', there have been gay rights groups protesting against it. OMG. Please. Lighten up people!

Its easy to say stop being so sensative if you're white. I dont see anything funny about them making fun of poor black neighborhoods. Just becuase you live in the ghetto doesnt mean you talk and spell all fucked up. Whats up with the basketball being one of the game pieces, the only thing their missing is a bucket of chicken and a watermelon.

who would let their little kids play the game n e way? i mean, no one is going to buy the game, so whats the big deal? i could see if it sold like millions of copies and all that, but seriously, who is going to buy it??? the dude just wants attention, he wants us to get mad about it, make a big scene, and draw attention to the game, its as simple as that. it dont matter if it was muslim-opoly and they had a "you are a terrorist, you get a convience store" or if they had, white trash-opoly when and they said "your tralier was hit by a tornado, loose a turn" bottom line is, things like this dont matter unless you make it matter!

Kids are dumb, anything nowdays that looks like it has something to do with rap they will buy it. There's already a negative image towards black males. This is just one more thing, no matter if anybody buys it or not people have a right to be upset.

kids aren't dumb, they do not know any better, you don't blame the kids for them doing whatever they want to do, you blame the parents, how much did you know when you were a kid??? however much your gaurdians taught you and there is only a negative image towards black male becuase we allow it to happen to us. no one makes us not take care of our kids, sell dope, etc. but us. of course our enviroments play a big role on us, but so does our up bringing. i mean, my parents got out the hood, and the majority of my family did too, and they all came up in some of the roughest parts, that was because they were taught and then followed what they were taught. if you dont teach, the kids cant learn.

why is faggot ok? so what if the act itself is wrong; its still a hateful name aimed at a specific popualtion. just because you dont have to dea lwith being called faggot doesnt mean it is ok t osay it to someone else.

i think it is funny how you guys are all angry about this, "I aint feelin dat "u got your hood hooked on crack collect 50" dats shits disrespect to da 10th power."..... that amuses me because you listen to music made by guys who have SOLD the crack, you listen to guys that glorify it and talk it up, and thats ok but a game doing THE EXACT SAME THING isnt?
please explain to me how that works.

what happens when a little kid listens to Cam'ron brag about slangin crack? or doing things to nas's daughter? or dmx sayin he is going to rape someone's daughter? or biggie TELLING YOU HOW TO SUCCEED AT SELLING CRACK? "thats different", right? i am sure thats exactly what you are thinking. but it isnt...

what about outkast doing jazzybelle and at the same time big boi JUST LUVS DEM STRIP CLLUBS. but thats different, right? there is no difference; if you are so outraged by this game, WHY ARENT YOU OUTRAGED BY THE PEOPLE YOU LISTEN TO?

When I was a Kid I did know better. When i say kids i'm talkin all the way till the early mid teens. The whole image rebellion stage. Most of the time they are rebelling against the parents. You think all those 13 and 14 year old kids you see walking around with their pants by their ankles and wave caps on are doing it becuase their parents said its ok? Thats what I mean by dumb. I wont make the exucse that Kids dont know any better either when they go out and kill somebody. They do know better. What they see on Tv they assume is how it all is. Its a negative image. Their parents cant be with them 24/7 to guide them. Most kids learn from their friends or family members.

im 20, if i walk around wit my pants down to my ankles my mom or grandma will smack me, rebellion and being a teen is one thing, its the part of life when you are trying to find yourself and you are very vulnerable to your surrounding and outside influence, yeah this might go on for a few years, but they will always come back to what they know if they were taught right, if you dont teach them right, they will be lost, simple as that...i agree with you totally though. but for example, i see little 4 and 5 year old kids running around singing 50 and know who he is, but who's fault is that?

Haha Yeah True. The 4 and 5 year olds Who knows. You know parents are getting younger and younger. Their parents probably listen to it and they here therefore its the parents fault like you were saying.

this board game is just a minor addition to all the bullshit racism and inequality which black people have faced since white poeple took over.

the game is wack but people will buy it, because they are ignorant.

it is different because movies shed light on topics like this

Argh man, come off it. The boardgame is clearly meant as a joke, to make fun of the obvious prejudice thoughts some ignorant people have about all black people. In that sense, it's actually bringing the topic up to the surface.
The redneck version will me making fun of white scum too. If you can't make fun of yourself, who can you make fun of...
If you don't have enough common sense to take this as the joke it's meant to be, then that says more about you than it does about the game.
Last but not least, how come nobody is really touching the valid points Truth Told has made...? If you want to get upset, get upset about the way black rappers portray your race on TV and radio and the way that that affect kids.
