General 808 tips

Hi-Lo

So I know a lot of this comes down to experimenting on my own, which I'm doing, but at the same time, just thinking about how much the 808 has been used over the past decade I'm assuming there are some pretty agreed upon techniques by now for getting the sounds a little nicer and not as standard sounding.

Anyone know some general techniques/tips for enhancing 808 sounds (whatever they are, kicks, snares, or anything)? Especially with the kicks I'm wondering how to get them a little cleaner sounding since they're such low res signals but at the same time still being able to 'feel' when they hit in my mix.

yeah depends on the 808 sample too... use that chart as a STARTING POINT... not as your final cutting/boosting points though.... because each sample calls for different eq'ing...

normally i just lower the his...and boost around the 60-120hz area....sometimes either cutting or boostin the 250 area also...dependin on what it sounds like...

not really that hard in my opinion... after u get used to it

Also, you should start by getting some clean 808 samples...

Basics of beat making: Your beat will sound as good as the sounds you're using....

no doubt, i went to the tr 808 website where they have a clean sampled kit of the entire machine, it helped a lot.

**** rules! if it sounds hot its hot.if u have to break rules to get the sound you want then do it! if u want to be creative then rules will only limit your artistic freedom.

a true artist must be free, to express himself best as possible.
good luck.

yea.. 808BD + Sine Sub Bass = Nastiness..

however if you EQ alot of the lows out of the sine (leaving it.. sounding like nothing pretty much) and tune the kick to the root note of the bass, u can make it work, but you'll still only be hearing predominantly the BD... so what was the point. see?
