I guess it all depends on what side of the tracks your grand parents were raised. I know it's hard for some white people to grasp but the word just doesn't carry the same meaning when the average black person uses it. Some things just can't be explained! I will say this, the N word around my way was viewed as more of a curse word if used by black people. If I said it as a kid I'd be smacked for that reason. Certain words you just couldN'T say as a kid but as an adult my elders had no problems with it. I still didn't say it around them due to the respect your elders factor. I feel u and everything everyone else is saying. I guess you have to use your own judgment. All I know is I'm not yelling out "cracker", redneck or anything else like that in a room full of white dudes...lmao...I can hold my own but anybody can take a beat down faced with those kind of numbers. I have many black friends and co workers and it seems to be more of a joke to them than anything. I don't think I have one black friend who is offended by it unless it's used in a REAL racist way, and you know when it is really racist.. I personally don't say or like the word, not because of a hateful root meaning but because it really just sounds stupid when someone says it. Especially white kids, but I don't like it when black dudes say it either..

Being a white person lost in the hip-hop world, I feel that by making hip hop music, going to hip hop shows, and posting on hip hop production/beat making forums, that I am treading on sacred ground. Ground that was laid by the past struggles of countless artists. I would so much rather be safe than sorry. There is absolutely no way to know if someone regardless of race/color/creed is going to be offended by the "n-word." I dare not say it. In the past, I admit, I have used the word. I'm sure almost everyone here has at least once in their life. But it's a word of unpredictable consequences. You say it to the wrong person regardless of your ethnicity or race, and you could piss off anyone regardless of ethnicity or race. I feel sick to my stomach now every time I hear white people casually say it. For white people especially, I am a firm believer that the word is completely uncalled for (regardless of intentions). It is a slap in the face to huge amount of people and a step in the wrong direction.

Hopefully, none of this was offensive to anyone, as it was opinionated. I have no right to dictate the criteria of what is socially acceptable and morally right, but c'mon, white people should not say the n-word. There's just no reason for us to say it, there's far better ways of calling someone a brother or a friend. It's just really unnecessary.
