    Sampling Q.

Lil' Jon, Scott Storch, Cool & Dre, Eminem, D4L, and whoever produces Young Joc's beats would all say "no." You don't "suck" or "not suck" based on whether or not you use samples. You don't "suck" or "not suck" based on whether or not you compose. It's what you DO with either method that...

    Sampling Q.

A lot of people have answered your first question pretty well...basically, sample anything you want. As for your second question...honestly, don't spend time trying to figure out how to work your samples based off of what other people do...come up with your own style and your own method of...

How long have yall been producing ?

Been producing for about a year...I'd say there've been about 3 of those "major changes" you're talking about. Honestly, every track I work on teaches me something new...my first few months or so I consider to be hugely experimental. Things have really started to click in the last two months...

    The industry overcompressing??

Props on posting up these articles. They were incredibly enlightening and provide compelling reasons to be careful when using other tracks as benchmarks for your "loudness." Anyone here have any recommendations on programs to use to create test tones?

    Layering Kicks

    1. On a computer, layer the drums on separate tracks in a sequencer or multitrack, before bouncing the result to a single track, .wav file...you can create a .wav of a single drum hit and use your controller to start banging out sequences, or, you can create a .wav of a full drum sequence and...

    Layering Kicks

That basically sums up what I was about to write, props 5th Basically what I try to do with layering: 1. Layer based on characteristic, as described above 2. Play around with the volume of each layer, maybe mess with pan a tiny bit if I want to create a fuller effect. Even if two drums...

what type of files do i need for acid

I've never encountered any problems with VSTs, but most of mine are small in size and CPU demand, so I don't experience any problems with computer stability aside from USB-related latency. Once I get bigger stuff installed, I'll have a better answer for you. But for now, I'll say that ACID...

    Melody v.s. Beat

There's no right answer, but for me, it's melody first. My reasoning's this: the drums keep people moving, but the melody keeps people FEELING...no matter how simple it is. And that's what's most important to me, helps me create the element I try and strive for in most of my beats. This...

    FL and Acid together?

I used to do drums in FL and chop samples in ACID, then import drums into ACID. Meh. I do everything in ACID now.
