its quite simple really, instead of trimming the top off the transients it just raises the noise floor making the quiet stuff louder.
As opposed to trimming off the transients and compensating by raising the gain. Its a better way of making a kick ring for longer.
Its taken me until I found this video to understand upwards compression myself, so there is that. But now I understand it, Im definitely going to be using it and thought it would be a great technique to share.
