HIP-HOP: BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES is a riveting documentary that examines representations of gender roles in hip-hop and rap music through ... all » the lens of filmmaker Byron Hurt, a former college quarterback turned activist. Conceived as a “loving critique” from a self-proclaimed “hip-hop head,” Hurt examines issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today’s hip-hop culture

good video. Honestly I hate the fact that all you see on tv is frontin' cats that try and act tough just because "that is what us white folk want to hear" and we are the ones that are mainly buying these albums!!! I dont buy it. There is no real hip hop on tv anymore PERIOD!!! Unless they are playing some throw back shit. Kids are growing up and they dont know any better, this is all they know. So this is what is selling, a lot of other music people are singing about real life situations and real life things and it sells, why do cats have to put on a front in hip hop? Now I know you can say look at movies and video games, etc. this is what people want to hear and that is why these rappers are rapping about guns, drugs, etc. It sells! But so does music when people rhyme about meaningful things.

Basically the thing that really made me discusted about this video is all those "rappers" just wanted to get money, PERIOD!!! They were complaining about getting signed and this is the only way the record labels with sign me....SHUT UP! This and this alone is what is wrong with hip hop today! Honestly myself and a lot of others dont care about getting signed, i just love hip hop, i love making beats, i love djing and honestly i dont care if I ever made a dollar again with hip hop. I will always love real hip hop and I will always be involved in hip hop!!!

These stupid rappers need to pull up their pants and stop getting fucked by the industry!!! Because it is just going to get worse and worse!

Word IS Life

I absolutely second this. Hip Hop was born on the streets, it belongs to the streets & ain't nobody can fuck with its spirit. 1000s John Doe can continue makin' ice cream van beats & clubbish booty shakers, but they will never kill the genuine spirit of Hip Hop. We simply have to do our thing and ignore all the hustlin' around us. That's how I be anyway, from time immemorial.
Artists must struggle & sweat blood, it ain't no roadside picnic! How can I seriously label all those commercial clowns as artists? They may be superb porn actors, pimps or even businessmen but they ain't no artists. Hip Hop is a cry out, a howl, not a bling bling playboy playhouse.

Keep It Real,
Wings of an Angel
