i started making beats because i've been writting raps for years and used to be in the videogame mulation scene like 5 years back and would make little songs over instrumentals i downloaded and started to feel like I didn't own what i worked hard and was proud to make. So i found fl studio one day and that's it. I have a few health issues so i'm not sure how long i'll be around, so music to me is very personal so i really doubt i'll sell it... plus i doubt people would really dig it anyway so it might not be an option. I started to write because at the time I lost some close friends and didn't have anyone around me that knew me like before, i was judged and couldn't articulate how i actaully felt about my life. So i wrote one day (cause an old friend rapped) and it made me feel better than anyone ever has.

music is safe. people come and go, but music does what you want. peace

here's my reasons:
I used to do music cause I had fun doing it. Than I got into analyzing music like it was art. I started to believe that music was an art that was also a learning tool for people to learn about eachother. I started to resent commercial mainstream hip hop because all the "music" lacked depth and meaning. So I started to make music that I hoped would reflect life. Cause to me the best "art reflects life" not "life reflecting art," which creates wannabes. Then I started realising no one would really care about serious issues I wrote about unless it was "entertaining." You can't really force understanding on people and people really just want to have fun. I still don't understand why some very serious/political films and music like "Taxi Driver" or 2Pacs "Me against the World" did so well. That's how my material used to be hardcore but with a point behind it. If you analyzed it you could see why this cat is the way they are. But it just stresses me out rhyming bout serious topics and so now I am beginning to come full circle and just do music for fun again. But I think I still use music to vent.

Its cool to see the various meanings music has on everybody here. Sounds like you have a deep affinity for music Chrono.

I love listenin to beats. Beats are so customizable and so expressive people tell you what to do all day, and i can go home and i dont gotta ask nobody about nothin on a beat. I wanna turn that snare up layer it with a clap put an 808 under the kick re-do the sample with lowend and nobody can say no. I can change whatever i feel like whenever i feel like and that was real appealin to me.

Also, i love workin with mc's and givin my opinion on how somethin should sound. Doin my own shit instead of soundin like other people and hopin people are feelin the same way about my music.

I've always wanted to be a super heroe and hip hop is my way of being that. When I make a beat it reminds me of the days when I would chill out and watch ninja turtles , Bravestar, Kung fu movies and stuff like that.

Now I'm in College and with all the work and stress that I have in my life , making beats helps me make extra cash and it keeps me sane.

I listen to the music first and foremost. I won't even give a song a chance unless the beats/instruments get me in some way.

I jus love to bob my head to something I've created out of almost nowhere. Music in my opinion is the best and most creative thing ever. Without it life would suck ass more than it already does. Anyone can take a picture or even draw a picture for that matter. But not jus anyone can make a sick ass beat. Now adays equipment is affordable and producing is becoming redundant jus like all these cats who think they can rap. But it still can be so satifying to hear a hot track.

Think of it like this. Put some shit in a time capsule, your own music, art, poetry, candy from your era, a porn flick, whatever, and open it 100yrs later and I gaurantee the music will be of most interest. Unless of course the porn flick has a super bangin chick getting poked by some dude with a baby's arm like dick.

Have you ever asked yourself honestly WHY you produce? Obviously we all love the music/hip hop culture thats why we want to be part of it. But do some of you use it as an escape? Do you produce tracks so you can rap over them? Do you do it cuz you really think your gonna blow up someday?

Personally I think something will come of my music, for the sheer fact that all I day everyday of the week (Apart from the times I'm at work, shittin or fuckin haha) all I day is listen to music or produce music. I never watch Television/Cable... I perhaps watch the odd movie... but thats about it. Music Music Music... Thats all I think about when I'm not listening to it...

But yea, I'm just wondering everyone elses thoughts on this... please no bullshit, this is a serious thread.

"Why do you produce?"

Because I'm chasing a dream and so is my crew. We're all classically trained musicians that got tired of playing the classics; so we left music...only to return to it years later in different roles then when we left. Instead of two piano players and three brass players, we've returned as two producers and three MCs.

I think it's at at the point with us where we have to do it because if we fight it will just end up back here again a few years later.

Besides we all have music-related jobs so we're around it all the time. I don't think we can ever leave it behind.

I produce because it is a part of the only thing I know...music. I cant get a scholarship to a great college, play pro football or basketball, or make it in the business world off of my sharp sense of accounting. I know music and I love to do what I do. I dream of the day when I can live in wealth knowing that I did it based on my dream to entertain. But don't get it twisted, I make music for me too. If I want to sit back and meditate, I am comfortable knowing that I can make that type of music on my own.

At first I started as an mc and had dreams of blowin up (with a talanted friend) so I thought were gonna nned beats and so I started doing research and got into it luckly it came natural as rapping did so I don't have too force it.I don't lack talent or creativty Im in the process of learning the technical BS.But lately dreams of blowing up have turn more into plans and actions yet producong has filled a huge void in my life and makes me very happy it's like a high to create something truely great I love it and will continue doing my thing regardless of the outcome.

i been making music as long as I can remember... Its just natural progression... i used to sing in lil r&b group i made up back in the day... always writing songs and hooks and shit..then i started rapping while cats beatboxed.. then we started recording our raps over other peoples beats.. then i wanted my own beats to record over... so now its taking full circle...writing singing raping and beatmaking... put it all together equals producing... it has just been the natural progression of my musical experience

I started because I love hip hop music and any beat that can make me nod my head. So I wanted to make music to make others nod their heads as well. Right now I'm most working on mastering my craft before I try to put it out there like I'm hot. So far I've received good feedback so I take that and keep producing what make the heads nod.

I was brought up in music. My father is a music lover. We had a whole bunch of records, 8 tracks and tapes in my house, and my father was always blasting away... (I'll have to check if there are some potential sample in those). The music was mostly carabean and french music (Brassens, Aznavour, Sweet Micky, Tabou Kombo... etc) and he's a guitar player too, so he was always playing the guitar while listening to music. My mom used to sing with him before. Actually, I think my best memories of my parents are both of them, on the porch, my mom singing and my father playing the guitar...

Later on, I got to learn drum playing at church. The church paid a maestro to make us (the church's group: a pianist, a guitarist (my pops), a trumpet player (my lil bro), a sax player, a bassist and a flute player)learn to play togheter. Most of the others learned chord progression and all that, but since the maestro wasn't a drum player (he's an ill trumpet player), he learned me how to fit my drums in the band arrangments... Since we were young, except for my dad, we were always making remixes of gospel songs with an hiphop, reggae, dancehall, jazz, or funky twist. And I was the one making those remixes, which was fun (and still is, actually). Right now, I'm the musical group leader, so you can imagine the faces of the grown ups when I remix 'You got Me' or 'You're all I need' with 'Jesus Loves Me'... Priceless!

Then later on, my lil bro got to be in a hiphop group called P.O.Dominos (Principle of Dominos), and they were using fruity loops to make beats. I listened to it and wanted to make some too. First, I tried to make caribean music (kompa), but that was waaaaaaaay too hard (the drums and horns were hard to do, AND the sounds I had were the ones coming with Fruity Loops 1.

Now, why am I doing music? Well, I guess I can say that it's a normal progression. I cant live without music, it's in my blood, it's my fuel! It's something to listen to a hot track made by someone else but there is nothing like listening to a bome beat that you made.
