where do you get yours?

i've noticed tht a way a producer programs/chops his drums is almost like a fingerprint...where do you guys get your drum ideas/inspiration from?

i definitely get mine from drum n bass patterns. dj krush's drums are exquisite and i like a lot of jazz drumming. also, i like that hardcore drumming too (with that double bass going like 4000 miles an hour)

DJ Premier, Havoc, Large Professor,Marley Marl, Easy Mo Bee and other "Boom Bap" producers > simple but effective patterns.

Loads of different places - I think d'n'b, jazz and rock are all heavy influences, but also I play the drums so the way I play translates directly to the sort of patterns I use, the way I chop up patterns [that I make or find] and the sounds I use.

I use old patterns and some just straight patterns used in hip hop which BTW hip hop borrowed their patterns from live drummers in Rock and soul back in the day.....listen to some real drumming with swing you will easily pick up what you need to do from that, I play drums as well but theres not a lot of need for tons of changeups when you doing hip hop beyond the breakdowns, unless you really want to do that.....drum and bass evolved using a lot of the same breaks hip hop was using for years but just sped them up....so it should be no problem to adjust to what you are doing....I know a lot of drum and bass people who moved into hip hop the last 3 or 4 years and they make dope cuts....oh and this is a good hint for anyone that finds themselves need drums.....or ideas....look for some old instructional records on playing drumset.....first you need to find yourself some drummers from the 70's a lot of them did instructional stuff on records that if you look hard it has tons of nice breaks and drums you can use that are clean with no music recorded nicely......I had a few of these records from carmine appice...that was my favorite back when I was learning drumset this cat did a lot of ROCK back in the 70's and eighties.

I bet you if you use your digging skillz and search knowledge you can easily find some VINYL instructionals to chop or learn from this list...excuse the post but html is plentiful...LOL

I can't say that I aim for anything in my drumpatterns. THe drums are the hardest part I think and they just flesh themselves out. I've notised though that I'm a sucker for Snare and multiple Snarehits in the last 4bar of the "loop". I dunno why. It usually sets itself off that way and I don't know where I got it from.
