The one thing that frustrates me the most is people saying that Hiphop these days suck. I'd argue that we are in a second golden age.
Ok, so I use to have the mentality of "today's rap sucks" and I will agree that it is a bit much to hear the same drums, kicks, and hats in every song. (which is why I love Kanye so much) But if you're an old head into that boom bap style it still exists, in fact that style of rap has evolved beyond boom bap if you look at Aesop Rock, Run The Jewels, Sage Francis, Murs, and my dude Anderson .Paak, etc. That entire community of Hiphop has progressed the "true" art form beyond what we know it as.
When it comes to mumble rap I think it is insane how popular it is, no one could have seen that coming. It's one of the reason I love Hiphop so much, you get use to what it's doing and then it flips on you. Beyond that you can compare mumble rap to scatting, don't focus on the lyrics, focus on the rhythm and the energy/feeling being presented.
As far as originality? Well...technology has progressed that anyone can spend a few bucks and make music. Most people have a laptop and all they have to do is google is "How To Make Music", download Audacity, find a beat on Youtube with "Whatever Type Beat", either buy a cheap USB mic or even use their laptop mic, and boom. It's how most (if not all) musicians start and it's the ones that stick to it that develop their own sound. I started out using Mixcraft when it was still free, graduated to Sony Acid, then garageband, then Logic...and that's when I started making music XD I digress
If someone tries to make the claim that Hiphop today sucks then they aren't looking very hard or just like to complain, this is coming from someone who use to love to complain. If you are unimpressed with the Top 40 version of Hiphop (and now I have to listen to Binary Star) then I ask you if you have ever been impressed with the Top 40...and I will admit some slip through (Cudi!). But even making a Top 40 song takes talent.
