btw, those DIY pre amp are based on Neve's and they're about $450. All details on parts, prints and schematics can be found on a website that I'll post later. Other DIY projects are SSL compressors to complete Class A mixers with pre amps, neve EQ etc etc. You just need a little bit of technical knowledge and if you dont know its a good time to start. Neve Pre amps and SSL compressors dont come in cheapo and think about the quality....

It's nice, but think about it; you need to find a good space suitable for recording those reverbs. So, it's nice for big studio that like to capture there own reverbs but as a bedroom techie you'd be better of with a Lexicon.

I thought the point was just to emulate pres the way a POD models amps? I want that versatility. I might need a warm pre one day and might need a transparent one the next.

It's actualy for guitars, we mostly record them dry and signal it through the pod during mixdown/mastering. It just depends on what suites what. They're also some speaker cabinets which we handle the same but by actual mic and speaker. But the pod is pretty good, I also use it sometimes to give my drums a bit edge in the same way I'd use Amplitube. So, you see, there's no real defined use for the tool, there are industrial standards though but I dont have to take em in account all the time. The flexibility of wanting different aglorithm simply lies in your inventory, I dont think one make/model is the solution, you need options to choose from.
