this is my first post so first I'd like to say hello to everyone here. I just started making beats or producing or whatever and I am hoping that being a part of the ILLMUZIK forums will help me get better faster. Anyone who reads this: feel free to introduce yourself, as I don't know anyone on the forum yet

Being a stranger here: how do you change your avatar? I tried clicking on Edit Avatar under the Settings and Options on the left side of the page but it seems like its impossible for me to change it some reason... Just trying to get a little customization haha...anyways I look forward to meeting yall and improving my skills...keep it real

to answer vice's question:

Right now I am using FL studio 8 XXL producer edition or whatever, but I am probably going to be switching over to Protools once I learn how to use it.. I am taking a Protools class at this recording studio in town next semester, so hopefully that should help.

As for hardware, besides the dell laptop im using to type this post, I currently own none. When I started doing this I thought I would go out and buy an expensive keyboard or an mpc but ive realized that until I really know how to mix the channels and learn more about EQ and layering, there really isnt any point for me to spend money. I'm not one of those type of people who thinks they can go out and buy a Motif and be Scott Storch..I'm solely focused on finding my own personal sound. I've just been relying on plug-ins such as Albino, Absynth, Zebra, and virtual replications of the moog, and other virtual synths, until I learn enough to feel comfortable buying equipment.

On a side note: I own a fender stratocaster and a twin reverb amp so i am going to buy a guitar USB cord and try to implement as much of my own playing into my beats as possible. I've been playing guitar for six years so im going to try as much as possible to incorporate a little fretwork into my beats...

A final question: When I do go to buy hardware this Christmas, do any of you have any suggestions for what piece of equipment should be first on my list?

wats good BC... it has to be relevant posts... otherwise a few with be deleted from ur post count... trust me... i know...lol welcome fam... and just rock what u got till u get more knowledge... check out the beatmakin vids, and also go to ur local music store a fiddle around with certain machines... it might help ur decision... u mite not get anything and stick with all software. peace.

If you have FL 8 I think your good to go for the moment.

No sense in buying expensive gear before wrapping your head around things.

That being said I have yet to switch from hardware to software so it's really about what you feel most comfortable with. Sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders and we'll be glad to help in anyway possible. It's a bonus that you play gtr, I love using gtr in tracks, protools class is always a plus!

thanks for introducing yourselves...im glad everyone seems to be really friendly here...even to a newbie like me. but ive asked around and all the top people say the same thing, "you have to do your homework to be good at this." so im just taking in as much information and advice as I can..thanks for the compliment relic...yeah when I started making beats using FL studio default sounds and not knowing what a plug-in was, I made a couple of decent beats and thought I was amazingly gifted..but then when I found out about mixing, layering, mastering, and all the tweaking that goes into the sounds themselves, I realized that I have a long road ahead hahaha..its just nice to have a place to talk to experienced beatmakers/producers and ask questions that no one in richmond has been able to answer so far..keep it real ya'll and youre going to see me all up in these threads ... hopefully i dont say anything too stupid

I have to agree with relic here, stick with FL, pick up and practice some of the techniques involved in making music.....ie.
Understanding the Key of a track,
Rythm,
Sample selection, chopping & arranging,
composing,

all these things can be done in FL.
You will be surprised how much there is to music, and how much to learn.
When you become reasonably good at some of the techniques above, then you should consider a more expensive DAW(production studio software ie Cubase,Reason, Pro Tools)
Or very expensive hardware.
Who knows you might come to the conclusion that making music isnt for you, in which case the less you spend the less is wasted if and when you come to that realisation.

The most important thing when making music is practice. Thats where most of the actual learning is done, through mistakes that sound good or attempting to apply a new technique you have read about or been shown. The more you practice the better your keyboard skills become.
Music is like Kung Fu. The more you learn, the more there is to learn.
