dude, I'm not really sure of the exact technical differences but the way it's been described to me is that an MPC2000XL is lighter and easier to carry round and is available at a much more reasonable price. The MPC4000 is best is you've got lots of cash and you're mainly going to keep it in the studio (supposed to be mad heavy). Most of the extra features on the 4000 probably wont make much of a difference to your beat making.

If I was you, and what I'm most likely going to do, is get an MPC2000XL first (which is dope for making beats), learn it and use it to make hot tracks and then in the future (maybe a couple of years when I have more cash) buy an MPC4000 for my studio or whatever. I'd still keep my MPC2000XL to make beats on and to take with me when I'm away from home or whatever.

This is just my opinion but I hope it helps.

There are major diferences, 4000 is a dream compared to the later models, It can come with a hard drive, 512mb of ram i belive and it's 24bit quality of playing samples(compared to the 16bit 2000) and even a CD burner. it's just a major update in todays world of music now
