Who knows but as long as there are beat battles and studios there will be gear of some sort, that won't go anywhere no matter how much PC's and Software advance...there's two reasons...touring or real studio musicians that use that same gear or workstations and also professional producers that have thousands and thousands to spend on the best hi quality gear that aren't really in the consumer or home market so their budgets don't limit what they can spend so when given the choice between this software they buy it and they buy some hardware piece even if it is just to have in the studio....I still think the Akai Brand will be around in some form...you got Roland making big leaps from the XP of keyboard workstations and then coming with the Fantom series and MV8000....I suspect that there will be even greater interchangabilty and cross compatibility with PC's and Macs as far as file exchange though.....but I think that the equipment will only get better..

I think most company's are gonna start makin all digital equipment with usb compatability.
I dont like the idea of that, but i know its slowly changin that way.

So soon its gonna be all computer musicians gettin all the money and fame. And theres gonna be the true analog-floppy disk-casette demo- beatmakers just doin it for the love of the music. Ill be there in the back, but im not gonna like it.

I guess what might happen with technology getting smaller is they'll begin to stick everything inside one box so you'll get a synth with a sequencer and samplers all done digitally then you'll get bit fat sounding analogue compressors and limiters and stuff. Also people are making hardware vst interfaces which look pretty fun, if they get less expensive then you can plug one into your workstation it will be hell powerful
