Whats a Real Producer??????

Im not really sure what Ive been doing!
composing?producing?
wht exactly does a producer do???
from my understanding a producer hooks up traxx and does all the legal shit and gets artists signed i heard that now producers are really just buisness men and hustlers!

Could someone please tell me what exactly those jobs are!

I'll do my best, there will certainly be other definitions...

1. Executive producer: the guy with the money and the vision who sits behind a desk and tells everyone what to do.

2. Producer: the guy hired by the executive producer to bring together the talent, musicians, studio, engineers, programmers, etc.

3. Composer: the guy who writes the songs.

4. Engineer: the guy in the studio who sits behind the mixer pushing the buttons, setting up the mics, tuning the instruments.

5. Remixer: the guy who takes elements of a song and makes a completely different track out of it. Popular with electronic music.

6. Masterer: the guy who takes the final tracks and makes them sound 'as good as possible' using compressors, eq's, some effects, and makes sure that the songs sound 'samey', that they sound good on the medium on which they are finally recorded (cd, tape, vinyl), and that they sound as good as possible on as many listening sytems as possible (car stereo, home stereo, walkman, radio, clubs).

I know that I've missed a whole bunch of stuff here...it seems that a lot of the lines between different jobs are slowly fading, it's not uncommon for people to do ALL of the above jobs when making a track. If you're the guy doing the work, I'd say you're a producer/engineer/programmer/composer.....

i would define the producer as the person, who has CREATIVE control over a "project", exec. yes as vit says the big boy with the "idea" or a name you think will help seel your record, they do nothing basically. Engineer is the guy who knows his stuff, basically the electronic musicians "session player", don at all aspects of music tech. Composser, well that is self explanitory. Remixed, vit has covered, as well as mastering, which is prolly gunna be done by your engineer.

That's a good question. I don't really know how to define producers now a days. I don't even usually say I'm a producer. I just say, I make beats and compose.

To me, a producer is just a guy who makes beats, people try to complicate it to make a guy who makes beats not feel like he's producing. I think that's wrong

well, a producer is NOT just a guy who makes beats- that is in terms of hip hop forone, because rock/jazz/etc dont do what we do how we do it.

i do agree taht a lot of people try and diss on "beatmakers" because they allegedly "arent producers' but this topic really is useless because no one can agree. vitanminman gave a pretty acurate description, however.
