The lunch room table and a pencil, then 8 years later I got a MPC2kxl.
I got it and relized it didn't have sounds in it. I was pissed and then I explored sampling and been on the crack ever since.

yo nas2000xl...

how did you like the MC-505? it seemed to me to be a lot more dance oriented than hip hop. it does have some pretty decent basses on it but i thought that was it. all the instruments sounded too fake to me. except the sitar and some of the piano type sounds.

Ya the 505 is really geared toward dance but you can get some cool different sounds off of it if you play around with the filters, sometimes I like to mix my red and blue jello too ... so it turns purle yipy!

I read somewhere in an interview with pete rock where he was asked if u were teaching someone to produce what equipment would u start em out on to learn the ropes? and he replied something like a dr202.

lol, now i know im stepped in the right direction
Me too. I got the sampler to go with it soon after. I did some of my most creative work on that machine.

big up the dr-202 that unit teaches production to the masses the old school way.

im finding the lessons learned on that machine r comming back to me real strong and the beats r elevating all the time.

now i use the sp505 and i aint lookin at gettin no mpc from the time madlib is rockin the 303, im staying with my machine till i get to a sick level of beats

I started on a casio keyboard and a 4-track. I played the keys live to a pre-done beat on the keyboard and recorded it to the 4-track. Then I would let my friends rap on the open track. It sounded like crap but was the most fun I've ever had making music!
