What Type Of Instrumentals Do You Make?

Do you focus on instrumentals which are made to shine on their own without vocals laid on top?


Which one do you prefer and why?

Also, any tips on structure of these two different styles.

Hey,

I'm still pretty new to hip hop production, so I don't know if this is the 'right' way to do it:

1. Lay out the groundwork for a track...melody, bass, drums, and some sort of arrangement.
2. Have the rapper come in an record over the beat.
3. Listen to the two of them together and see what can be changed in either to make them flow better together.
4. Make the appropriate edits in the vocals, then redo the music to match.
5. Mix.
6. Serve.

I try to make instrumentals which sound good by themselves, lots of stuff flying around, cuts and other edits, 'ear candy' so that it stands well on its own. This is what guys who make techno music try to do as most of it doesn't have vocals to hook people in, we use other sounds as leads instead of a voice.

The emcees I work with usually pick out which tracks they would like to flow too the most. I always work on making the best music possible and everytime I sit down to produce I want to outdue the last track I've done. So I'm steadily improving and even working on my weak spots (not many) from what people have critiqued me on. I also like to get the concept for the project I'm working on and the type of emcee it is and then produce based on that. I check out their flow and what would compliment their lyrical skills.

I make beats for MC's to shine on .... but it goes hand in hand ..... a dope beat is cool but its even better with dope lyrics.

Well if you understand how an MC Flows it makes a big difference because I will tell you the majority of tracks that say for instance win a beat contest usually are not the kind a material a spitting mc will want....now that is not always the case but generally it is.....a good MC just needs a consistent beat with a consistent change pattern to use for a song....now freestylers can use almost anything but from what I can tell the beat or battle type track isn't always what an MC is seeking.....I mean how many time have you had a roomful of MC's and they are listening to beats and they go that's a hot beat,,,, but no one can flow on it......I have seen this sooooo many times so it's all who has the skills to flip a track and turn it into gold or platinum.....

Im still learning, but from my observations amd having a few mc's flow my shit - i think BigD is right on point...Consistancy is def. a key factor.

i just continue to make all styles of beat...i think versalitily is the key to being successful in this business. when im workinn with mc's i come prepared..i got ever rap sub genre covered....club, battle, epic, slow, fast, i just hit my man off with a dance hall track, i think you gotta do evrything, ...............but to answer your question Mr. Messenmger i acctually like to make beats that stand out on there own as opposed to havin a mc ryme on em. If anything save your separate tracks so you can take them out or even just lower the volume of certain tracks during the verses then raise em back in the chorus or sumthin to that nature...my advice is overdo it because its easier to have a track with too much goin on and be able to take away parts than have your mc unhappy because the track isnt filling enough.

i make beats that are ment to be rhymed on, one person said that the beats in competition on not made for rhyming, that damn right because for a beat to rapable it has to basic and dope, some this tuff i hear is way to complex, listen to any primo beat he would be torn apart by some of these posts.
