What do you dig for? (Not sampling)

Just for pure listening pleasure?

I have been collecting Jamaican music for a little over 7 years now. It's an expensive hobby, as many original records have not been re-issued or re-pressed. The music is simply amazing, and I can see a lot of influence in hip-hop. I have been trying to limit my spending, but usually I spend around 50-100$ a month on Jamaican records. It's my addiction and I love it! How about you guys?

Heavy metal , there you have it. My dirty little secret, I don't have much but I always keep an eye out. Reminds me of Crunk, shit gets you hype, ready to just to punch someone for living.

old blues, 1920's club music, good heavy metal (im a big iron maiden fan), 60's psychedelic, some old country, funk, wierd stuff like Vanilla Fudge or Carl Sagans Universe lp..

My ipod is full of my lp's that I ripped and cut. I get tons of inspiration from these lps! So much inspiration I do not have the time to keep up with the ideas. I wish I knew of a program that I could use like recycle to cut the tracks up instead of the time consuming "cut & paste to new track" route.

Anything and everything depending on my mood and what I can find: Heavy metal, Bebop, Big Band stuff, reggae, dub, ska, dancehall, blues, (not that Chicago Blues stuff, I like it raw), world particularly Asian and Middle Eastern, Krautrock and other 70's prog rock like King Crimson et al, classic rock, old country and bluegrass, soul (I love it but I never use it for sampling), funk, electronic breakbeat stuff etc etc etc. and Hip Hop too of course.

only just got my first turntable (as in yesterday), but cannot wait to go to some record fairs and record shops and try to find some jems.
as for what i would go out and try and find, it would be jazz or funk. id buy a funkadelic record even if i had it on CD. i can see myself spending a lot on digging in the future, lol

Once you start digging, you will be broke. Almost a guarantee. Do research before you dig, and always, ALWAYS check the condition of records before you buy them. Dealers and some record shops like to over charge for records, so shop around at different locations and see who charges what. E-bay can be a great way to get good deals, just be patience in whatever you do.

Yeah, and I havent got much money to start with, lol. Yeah I've noticed already a little bit of dust on a record can make a lot of difference, so I'll be sure to check the condition. As for shopping around, I don't think theres too many places around where I could shop, so it'll be record fairs and boot sales I think, lol.
Thanks for the advice about eBay, though I'm always weary when dealing with eBay. but i suppose it'd be best for finding those records I know I want.

That's it, just be patient and don't be to impulsive haha. That was my problem when I first started digging. You see a record, buy it, then regret buying it a year later when you notice that it's hot garbage and sits on your shelf. Don't always follow what other producers/people look for, listen to different kinds of music, and you'll find that you develop your own tastes after time. Anyways, enjoy diggin', there's nothing quite like it!

If im not digging for something to sample, then I always dig for any golden era hiphop on vinyl.
I dig for my djing pleasure if not for samples.
Now that I have serato, I have stopped digging altogether.
But you really cant beat the crispy highs and sonics of vinyl, not to mention the character of the cracks and pops.
Using orignial vinyls with their own markings for cutting up make my life as a dj much easier.
