I'm a little late to the party, wanted to get involved. I really like this premise of everyone flipping the same song, real cool.
Anyways, last night I couldn't get anywhere with it. Tonight I went back in and felt like I got somewhere with it.
Here is my interpretation:

Hey man, welcome to the flippage spot, hope to see you as a regular on here. I'm feelin what you did with it, it was spaced out nicely. The drums were sick too, it all fit. Very laid back. That breakdown seemed a tad long, kinda got lost in it, but the 2nd part was cool too once it came in. Drums wit the sample and the vibe, nicely done.

Many thanks, glad you were feeling that.
Regarding the transition, one sequence started on the one, the other on the two, so bringing them together was a bit difficult as I just recorded straight live from the MP into the computer.

I also went back and grabbed my first attempt from Friday night, it's very odd (lfo's, pitch shifting, etc), but it's all from the main sample except for the drums. My girl was feeling it, so I figured let me get it off the hard drive and post that up too. Here's the link:

Now for some reviews:

Grafik - you started it off real nice, definitely sent the bar high. I was feeling it.

Knox Raw - nice drums, liked the sound. I would say drop the horns during the verse, they clash with the vocals, they're both fighting for the same sonic real estate.

Spanish Harlem - I'm diggin this one big time. That's my shit, dark and emotional, I really liked your flip.

Producer Gyal - this shit was funky as hell, could definitely see this one getting people moving, it's got a lot of heart. It was bright, bouncy, rolling, sweet, warm and smooth. Please make more beats.

5th - real nice, classic native tounges type feel, that's my shit. That horn with the delay brought back some nice memories. I like that little drop where the kik hits twice then the music comes back in, good shit.

ABeatsC - I really liked this change up, this made me see how cats from different backgrounds flip the same thing. The groove was hot, my only comment would be to mix the drums more, the open hat and rimshots were a bit too loud for me.

Silk - Like your take on it, very musical. I would run a low pass over the bassline, make it a little bit deeper and muddier, but that's just my taste.

So yeah, good to be in the mix, I'll definitely keep flippin.

It's called "Good Times Roll (Ill Muzik Flip #7)." Thanks in advance for the comments...I know that it's late. I'm not really satisfied with it because I'm just learning how to flip, but ah well. Comments for everyone else tomorrow.

edit: Updated. The hits were off beat during the verses and the background strings went off key at certain points. There's still discord in the chorus; I can't seem to EQ the strings out of the main loop.

DeStructuralize - really nice, I really dug your take. Reading your bio on Soundclick, real modest, you took me by surprise the way you flipped it and put it together, feelin it.

Big Rob - nice groove, seemed like the horns were a little off key, that never got in the way for a lot of cats though. Keep practicin those chops, looking forward to hearing more.

Edit: thanks for the compliments dahk. To everyone: every track that I listened to was nice to listen to, these are just a few things that stuck out in my mind. The stuff below might sound nitpicky but that's how I like feedback...return the favor & do me some damage so I can learn faster .

Grafik: real nice flip. Mellow sounding in a good way. The soloed horns work beautifully and are transitioned into well.

KnoxRaw: I like the melody, but the F and G (second and third notes) seem off beat. Didn’t really like the acapella add, but that might just be me. Well done overall.

Harlem/Philo: The kick and snare are a little loud for my taste, but they definitely bring out a sweet rhythm. Other than that this was well done. The strings work well, but the second layer of horns seems a bit discordant.

Specialist: I didn’t hear the original sample but the beat is tight.

PG: Simply awesome. Shakers seem to get rather repetitive after a while (if I’m not mistaken, throughout it’s a 4/4 pattern with one on each quarter) but only if you focus on them. The arrangement is simply gorgeous, I’m loving it.

5th Sequence: Nice, extremely clean. The layering is subtle but effective.

Ruimixx: Tight. Creative and a little hard to follow, but that’s kind of the spirit of jazz music . As such, I can’t really envision an MC on this, but that’s not a bad thing; the beat lives, breathes, and grows on its own. Very RJD2. With that being said, I personally would make the melody a bit more pronounced.

ABC: Awesome! When the drums come in, it’s definitely on some next shit. I’d finish it if I were you.

Slik: Bassline is a little loud for my taste. Nicely flipped. I agree with ProducerGyal, hearing the drop out after 1:49 is fresh.

Dahkter: Really digging the second half of the first beat you posted. The second one is very unique, and portrays a nice sense of darkness.

G2: The horns seem a bit off beat, but the flip brings out a nice melody. I felt that in the second half the high A, C, and D horn notes could’ve been integrated better rhythmically. I’d pick a grittier sounding kick.

CMP: It’s a good start, especially for being done quickly. I’d go ahead and finish it. Awesome flip, late night riding indeed.

This was cool, the drums were nice I liked em. The sample arrangement was cool too, i think it could use some grit piled high on those drums an then some filtering and compression on the sample to really get a phat grimey vibe on. It sounded cool, but the hella clean hihat didnt go with the mix really, it was too pristine. Everything else was tight, i dig it!! see you on the next sample flip.

The sample and base are the main elements and the drums are way overpowered. I think the mix would be locked in a sick groove if they were lowered behind the drums and the drums were the main drive force of the track. Try compressing your drums, filtering them and EQing them to taste or whatever, but then lowering the volume of your sample arrangement and bass so they sit and work with the drums. This has a tight concept though man, I dig this too.

bigrob hahaaaaaaaaha glad you came to the dark side!! LOL na, thats cool that your trying sampling though. Composing isn't not hip hop, but that raw sound of the early 90's is from sample based music. This is a cool idea, it could be developed more as i totally know your aware of lol, but you have a general idea of how a flip can go down. The drums were cool, the kick drum was a lil too punchy (i wanna say it has some dominant frequency thats making it overpowering). The horns were cool for a start, you should check into extending that 2bar loop into a 4 bar or 8 bar loop-- even if it means taking your 2 bar loop, copying and pasting it to a new pattern an then changing a few chops or notes or whatever. But yeah, you have the general idea bro!! see you on the next flip.

Now that I give it another listen I know what you mean. The drums are practically hidden. I think this is something I've been struggling with for a while; I usually leave the drum volume fairly low while arranging everything to reduce ear strain and probably am so used to hearing them that way that I don't turn them back up during the mixdown. I'll redo the mix sometime.

no doubt man, i just wanna tell you i've been through the same thing before. I couldnt understand why my drums didnt sound sick, they werent defined and always buried. I'll save you the trial and error by saying this. Make your drums as you would normally, but make the sample fit the grove of your drums. Not only in the drum pattern, but also frequency and volume-wise. volumewise is a huge part of it but easy to get once you start figuring out the sweet spot.
