I'm studying urban studies at university and have been interested primarily in housing development. I stumbled on an interesting website created by a student of Toronto university. It photodocuments different housing projects and developments throughout most north america. Thought some of you may be interested in seeing the differences and similarities between the designs.

That shit is depressing man, its a great link but it just brings back a bunch of bad memories for me.

Im glad your positing it though becasue people need to see this side of poverty, espically folks who live outside an urban US enviroment and try to emulate what they dont understand.

FYI the new orlenes houses are the way the projects look back in FL.

man living in LA you see these places everyday. dont get me wrong LA has its nice places but for the most part it sort of looks like this when you're almost downtown. Sh*t the place where the Staples Center is used to be skid row. now it looks all nice with Staples and the convention center there but drive down 2 blocks and its still skid row. shit is maddd depressing. oh well! still beats seeing the ghetto's in the philippines

i live in grangetown, in cardiff, capital of wales(uk).....it aint bad or 'ghetto' or whatever, but theres some real bad parts....lotta redevelopment been going on, and one side the road, theres likee 200G apartments, oter side all high rise flats n shit,....anyways, was driving past the other day and commented on how i'd love to live in the big apartments....my mate replied by sayin 'no andy, THATS where ya wanna live...GHE-TTO man, GHE-TTO...' Pathetic....why would ya wanna live like that man?!? too many people wanna be from the 'ghetto' nowadays...grrrr....

Classic you're right, it is depressing. I've only gone through about half of that site so far and it just made me depressed! It's really messed up though that even in 2005 there's still lots of areas like that. Not just the projects, but all the abandoned buildings as well.

Well said man, when i was in uganda i saw shit that u couldent even fathem in your nighmares(AIDS, Abused chilidren, etc..) I dont care how bad it is here in the states, its not close to shit in 3rd world countries.

With that being said your right also about upnorth cats not understanding about down south. THere is soo much povertry(espically amoung blacks) below the masion dixion line. Seeing that shit just brings up bad fuckin memeories.

Thats why i get sick to my stomac when people try and glorfy that ish, and i get even sicker when people who have no idea what they are doing try to emulate that lifestyle.

I grew up in harlem. I know what this is like. When I was young we like in an apartment building just like the one on the website front page. The landlord abandoned the building with all the tenants still living in it. Cut off the heat in the middle of winter. Cut off the gas, and didn't purchase anymore oil for the boiler. Didn't pickup the trash in the building. The tenants had to do it all until they found somewhere to live. But we still didn't have heat or water for 3 months.
Finally got accepted to live in the projects and experienced living like sardines till I was 18. City housing can be very grimey at times, but it does provide a roof, hotwater, heat to raise your family.

Thanks for providing feedbacks guys, it's always good to see different views. Incredibly enough, alot of housing projects were replacements for tenement/slum housing developments. Still, like Louie said, a roof is better than no roof.

There's a book I read a while back which provides a detailed account about various housing projects throughout the states. It's called Creating Defeinsible Space by Oscar Newman. An interesting and enjoyable book, I recommend it for furthur info.

Here's the link to the book http://www.defensiblespace.com/book.htm
No need to buy it, you can download the PDF file for free.
