what's up guys..i have a headache..i got a 2.4 ghz processor with upgraded ram and a creative audigy soundcard, but that shouldn't be the problem cause i use a MOTU 828 mk 2 to midi up vst's that i trigger via a korg Triton..i'm using my MPC to sequence everything..but for some reason i could only get up to 59 ms latency and it sucks!! i don't think it's the equipment...but i have latency regardless if i'm in Sonar or just trying to play around with the VST's...i might be missing some setting on the computer or Triton but i don't know where to start..any help is very appreciated!!

I have this very problem! i was using cubase and steinberg VSTs and foned the the cubase helpline. I had purchased a soundblaster audigy NX and couldnt work out why i was still having a delay. They said that the audigy isnt ASIO supportable. Therefore it is absolutly useless. I returned it and am lookin at different makes of card by music companies! Hope this helps!
Later!

Hey,

1. MOTU + PC = Garbage. Macintosh Only, Thank U.
2. Audigy + ASIO = Garbage.
3. Two soundcards in the same computer = Asking for trouble.

Why do you have two cards running? And why would it not be a problem that you have the 828 as your soundcard?

If I had your system, I would do the following:

1. Remove the Audigy and sell it to some kids.
2. Make sure that the chipset on your 1394 card is NOT made by Texas Instruments; for both audio and video capture, these seem to be problematic.
3. Open up the Cuemix software which came with the 828 and look around for some sort of buffer setting which you can drop to reduce latency.
4. In your VST host software, make sure that it is accessing the MOTU's ASIO driver and not a different one.

You haven't mentioned whether or not you're on a PC; I'm assuming that you are because you've installed an Audigy...

Take care,

Nick

thanks vitamin man..i'm new to computer music, but went throught the MOTU manual and changed the buffer settings....thanks for the reply..and i had a MAC but i returned it...i just thought pc carried more bang for the buck since i'm going to college and it's still prettty much pc wherever you go...but i seriously don't get the MAC vs PC debate..besides operating systems aren't they about the same clock speeds?

Hey,

Yeah, Macs and PCs both do the same thing, they crunch numbers. The current Mac is supposed to be super fast, but a PC will overtake it eventually....then Mac will overtake the PC, and the PC will overtake the Mac etc. One is not inherantly better than the other. They both steal (or 'license', if you want to be politically correct) stuff from other companies and each other, they both have good and bad software, and they both can be used to download porn.

MOTU are notorious for making great professional stuff that runs lika a champ on the Macintosh, then to earn a few more bucks they write half-assed PC drivers and market it to Windows users.

Just go to their website...you can see Macintosh ALL OVER THE PLACE: Digital Performer, Unisyn, Mach 5 (Mac-only apps), links to Apple's site, information about compatibility with OSX.x, G5 compatibility, articles about famous Mac/Motu users, etc.

Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not pissed off at Motu for being Mac advocates; if I were to get a card for a Mac, they would be the first people I would go to. My beef is that they market these great products as being compatible with Windows, and this is simply not the case. People see all this wonderful hardware, the little WDM or XP logo at the bottom of the box, and buy it not knowing that they have a potential disaster on their hands.

At my last job I had to play with two Motu products: the 828mkI and an older 2408 with with 324 card. Some of our computers wouldn't boot with the 324, and the 828 wouldn't allow us to monitor anything through the headphone port. The Cuemix software crashed all the time when you tried to change settings, like what port to sync to or using the 'legacy mode' for non-WDM software...we wrote emails and called Motu all the time trying to figure out what was wrong, we didn't once get someone on the phone or an email reply.

If you get your 828 to work on your PC, I tip my hat to you in congratulations...

Good luck!

Nick

I think the Audigy 2 is ASIO compatible. At least its advertised as such. That being said I would go with something a little more geared toward music vs games. Check out the new EMU (part of Creative) line of sounds cards. I personally have had a lot of luck with the MAudio Delta 66 (with the OMNI I/O breakout box) Not once have I ever had to worry about the drivers or quality of the box. Get it down to about 5 ms in cubase and 3ms in Reason without pops and clicks. Also if your using Sonar, it defaults to WDM drivers which can cause a pretty long delay with even some pro cards. There is a setting hidden under the audio preferences to change it to ASIO.

Buy a new soundcard or try to lower the buffersize in the options of your sequencing program!
