vocal chops and effects

I was wondering if anyone here does any recording with pop/hiphop music and knows a bit about vocal editing. a bunch of mainstream tracks before a verse drops will chop up the word to give it a nice transition. an example of this is The Far East Movement - Girls on the Dancefloor. FFWD to :30 seconds for an example of what im talkin about.

let me know if you guys have ever done this, or if you can think of a workaround.

what i've done in the past is just record a short vocal sample, and then import into reason and then mess around with the sample and chop it up however i'd like.. but I'd rather do everything in the DAW alone.

logic, I know how to chop up the file manually, and then place everything into an exs sampler and mess around with it like that.. but I want something that will automatically cut it evenly into an even number like 1/32nd beats.

Yea man all you have to do is select the scissor tool and hold down option and while clicking your mouse and drag to the desired length of the audio region on the grid view once you have the division you want to chop let go of the click and it will chop the rest of the audio region at that interval. Here is a good video that Just Blaze did with Mike chav. Peace

hahah thanks hedrok, thats crazy i just checked that video out yesterday right before comin back to this thread to see if anyone replied. thankss though that video is dopee... such a good technique for chopping.

i just switched from using protools 7 and seriously logic has to be the best allinone box and the interface is amazing. the souds, presets, effects, and everything are really good. everything works just right out of the box, including midi, which has always been a faltering part in daws.

let me know if you got any tips or techniques youve found out with logic

Yea Fam no prob. Logic is dope. I only have express but I'm going to upgrade to Logic Studio 8 in about a week. One thing I miss from PT8 is Xpand 2. PT8 is still great but I will do the majority of my own shit in Logic at home and bounce it to audio tracks when I head to the studio I work out of. The rest of my team is still on PT 7.4 and 7.4 HD lol so I have no choice but to use PT. I would say learn and master both.

But on the Tips on Logic. Using that scissor tool while holding down option auto chops samples very well. Its like "auto chop -> do it" on the mpc lol. Peace

E - Try using the Strip Silence feature in the local contextual menu. It wont cut your file into equal grid slices, but it will detect attack and decays according to your settings and then slice out all the silence that exists in between words, etc.

Or....
You can use the Apple Loops Utility.

Or....
You can jus do it the way you were doing it but change the snap to grid function according to what your trying to achieve. ie. Prepare your loops start and end points so that your region lines up with the grid correctly, then choose BAR in the snap drop down menu, then proceed to use either the marque tool or the scissors.....I like the marque tool personally.
