I'm pretty sure somebodies gonna come in with a techinical research of the dynamics of an osalater by calulator to the waveform to air response to the basis or your room size reply.

But I think you just got to go in and play around with some effects to see what you like, or what caters to your taste but I've found Stereo Deciator, Compression and EQ,to real good starting points on my KICKS. NOT IN THAT ORDER. And EQ and Stereo Deciator and real short delay on my snares,
The delay are so short that it sounds like one sound but its reinforced by the real quick attack short delay.

Go in and tweak with it till you like.

I would suggest learning as much as possible about whatever hardware or software that it is you use...and then maybe a good starting point for you if your totally blank is to listen to a favorite artist of yours and then see what you can do to try and replicate that snare for example or that effect, etc...
Thats what i do sometimes and it turns into something totally different than what i started with but cool at tha same time.
Who ever said to experiment was right...use all tha fx you have and see what fits you, try even bending or phasing samples - what evers clever?
One thing you can never go wrong with in my opinion is good ol reverb...that shit iz always tastefull to ad but even with reverbyou have adjust it according to yer preferences and tha track itsself.
