Tips on Transitioning

I've had to scrap many tracks because I just couldn't achieve a smooth solid transition. Also, most of my transitions are usually a build up that leads to a moment of silence and then starts back up. I use it a lot and it just seems so cookie cutter and stale, maybe it's just the way I go about it.

Anyone have any good tips or personal preferences when it comes to transitioning?

I like to take different elements out. Let's say in a verse i would only take the lead melody.. Sometimes i do it like you do with silence, or maybe just take out the drums for a bar. Or moving melodies octave up or down, or a drum fill. Or I will slightly vary the drum pattern in new section.

Sounds like you're focusing on the arrangement aspect. Don't forget the written. Chord progressions can play a part. New chords, change key, modulate from major to minor, etc.

Also when working the arrangement, don't forget about substituting sounds in addition to bringing sounds in/out.
