well while i agree with whats said we have to look at the reasons why are communitites are in such bad shap.. most of the problems effecting african americans are not new.. (poverty, education, access to resources, economic empowerment) these have been around for hundreds of years W.E.B debouis addressed most of these issues in his book "souls of black folks" and that was almost 100 years ago

Here is the real question we need to ask ourselves as African Americans

how is it that other immgrant groups, like jews, italians, hispanic's,Africans, mexicans and west indians,Can immgrate to this country and face "most" of the same econmic disadvantages that afro-americans face.. but yet manage to move up a grab a piece of the american dream. While african americans still fall behind.. Every other immgrant group that has migrated to this country has managed to lepfrog us... even other groups of african decent(west indians and africans)

Why?

This is the million dollar question.....

I feel if you answer this you answer the problems in our communitity....

The only answer is the limitations we put on ourselves (although many were ingrained into us from the days of slavery).

Talk to your average dude on the street. They idea of them doing anything but struggling doesn't even enter their head.

Millions of black kids growing up thinking they ain't going to be shit. They can't go to college. Even if they do get a job, they'll just get laid off or the boss will find a way to fire them.

In a capitlistic society, ignorance and poverty can only prosper if it is accepted with unwaivering faith.

Other cultures seem to be willing to help each other out.

My wife is Colombian. As soon as a new Colombian or a friend of the "clan" (her word) shows up everyone helps them out in some capacity. They help them find work, get a car (or rides places until they can get one), donate money, give them a place to live.

Black people don't work like this. Unless I have something another brother wants, they will very clearly interact with me on a "fuck you" type vibe.

Why do black men always have to act tough? I can't understand this. Am I the only Black guy in the world that smiles at people he doesn't know, and tries to be friendly.

Why do brothers need to walk around with a mean mug like they'll stab anyone that says "Hello" to them? Why is it cool to act like you don't care about a damn thing!???

I need answers. I'm treated like a lepor in my own community.

Ok...I'm glad you put that question out there. And it's a very good one. I've sat back waiting for someone to hit the nail on the head but no one has yet.

Don't think for one minute that these "immigrants" who on their on free will "migrated" to this country don't get help from our "dear old government". They have access to loans that you nor I could qualify for even if we had A1 credit.

IMO the key words in your statement were "immigrant" and "migrate". If you're an African American who's fathers fathers father was a slave then guess what? You didn't willfully migrate to this country there for you're not afforded the same opportunities that "immigrants" are afforded. It's no coincidence that most gas stations and Dairy Queens are owned and operated by west Indians. You as a decedent of slaves can't get that special "immigrant" loan which in most cases they don't even have to pay back! This isn't made up.....it's the Gospel!

I understand that you cannont apply the immgrent model of success to african americans... becasue like you said those immgrants came on their own accord and while they may have come from messed up places that had a sense of cultural idenitiy and optomisim as that was stripped from afro- americans along time ago...

with that being said.. there comes a point in time where you have to start asking yourself.. why are things the way they are... there are NUMERIOUS scholorships for african americans to go to college and graduate school.. but guess who ends up using most of those scholorships and loan oppertunities.. first and second generation west indians and africans...

so the question still stands why do we allow the american dream to fly right by....

I have this discuss with my frat brothers all the time and the conclusion is this.....

Black americans suffer from the batterd spouse complex... basically we have been beat down so much for so long that we dont even realise we are in a messed up situation anymore... Messed up seems normal... and normal seems messed up....

I personally don't think we willfully let it slip through our grasp.

I've been either in business for myself or attempting to be in business for myself since '95 and to be honest, it's just so damn hard for us. We have to attack the "American Pie" from so many diff't angles that it's real easy to spread yourself to thin and it's even easier to just throw in the towel. I myself will live the rest of my life trying to be self employed but I can easily see how the average minded person wouldn't give it a second thought. Most of my success at being my own boss is do to my wife's consistent work history. We all need help and the black community is so decimated when it comes to having homes with both a mother and father, that it's damn near impossible for that mother of three to put her dream of being an entrepreneur to work. Sons who's father got incarcerated at a critical time in his life had to choose between getting an education or helping ma dukes make ends meet. The plight of the poor, black and disenfranchised in this country is unlike any other minority. We get gang banged by this world on a daily. Though some of it is of our own doing.....we get bent over with no Vaseline on the regular. For some it's just easier to give up the fight. Me, myself, uh uh...I just can't settle for what ever. I got to fight the good fight til they bury me.

like class said its all about the mentality...... where we see an ecomnomic and social trap, immigrants see a goldmine... we have been trained to be divided and think divided. I have had the luck and pleasure of growing up in a diverse area and being exposed to many diffrent culutures.... i was only one of a few black kids in my elementary/middle school... but when school ended i spent my summers mostly in the all-black innercity detroit.. went to a really diverse high school, but actually ended up finishing my junior and senior year at a private high school, then went to a super diverse college, and now i live in bedstuy. ....so i got to see both sides of the game firsthand at every stage of my life....one repeating theme ive noticed just in dealing with diffrent people is that black folk defintely keep each other down. its got nothing to do with white people or government or whatever. Its funny u said that myth, cuz i feel the same way. Im proabaly one the most positive thinking black men i know, i never discourage anybody from following their dreams, and im never one to stop somebody else from acheving their goals. but unforatunately many black americans for whatver reason dont WANT each other to succeed. and they are determined to bring everbody down with them. and parents, many of whom are the very ones writing these articles and complaining about the youth today, play the biggest roles in this ongoing cycle. I cant tell u how many times I hear parents discouraging their children from doing constructive things. Or worse, and equally as common, parents doing absultley nothing to help their children to go down the path to success and reaching their goals.

example

I playd soccer growing up and my brother played tennis. two "non-hood" sports lol.. people would ask what sport i played and they would look at me funny when i said that. but I also got a scholarship to college because of it, and i got to travel around alot and interact with diifrent people and got to actually become friends with some other kidsfrom more afluent families because of it. I got to see how they lived and how things were when you had money and success. Without soccer, I wouldnt have gone to the private high school, and wouldnt have started, or finished college. and i would have never got to meet some influential cats, wouldnt have learned how to communicate with the "rich" kids and develop people/networking skills. I wouldnt have done none of that. My point is There are plenty of parents that would have dismissed me from being a soccer player from the very start and discouraged the idea of it. when in fact the whole experince really opened my eyes to what COULD be. I think in general many black children are "shut down" at an early age and discouraged from their passions and conditioned to accept the fact that there life is going to be a constant struggle from which there can be no advancement/breakout.

As a white man living on the other side of the world, (literally), I am aware that I am singularly unqualified to comment on this issue; however, I would think that at least part of the reason for this statistic is the large numbers of blacks living in impoverished and segregated communities, ("ghettos"). Could it be that some of these killings are for the simple fact that other blacks are the closest and easiest victims? I would be interested to see what the statistics are for white on white crime in impoverished white communities. I'm guessing it would be similar. I don't think that the Colin Powells of America are killing each other in their nice suburban communities.

Surely the main issue here is the subjugation of a whole nation by an elite in whose best interest it is to keep people seperated and fighting amongst themselves rather than directing their anger and frustration at the real culprits. You can tell me to shut up and that I don't know shit, it's just a thought.

(IMO IMO IMO)

Aw man, I was just commenting on one aspect from what I know. I'm not trying to tell anyone how to do shit or how to solve the problem. I said I'm not qualified to really comment on this issue and I certainly don't want to argue about it. I'll just keep out of it if my views aren't welcome. I apologise.
