I usually play with them and once i find out one that i like i read up on them.

as for reverb, compression, de-esser and eq'ing, you better learn about them.

play...u get the basic idea what there gonna do but i never really know for sure...most of the time its just luck or a good guess

I am reading the Sound on Sound's Creative Recording: Effects and Processors. Its really good at breaking down the terminology for you. It's a been a good helper for me.
