this is from Father Jah on myspace:

After a much hyped, yet failed stint with Dr. Dre and Aftermath, Rakim has found a new home. Although there was talk of Rakim planning to sign to Talib Kweli’s Blacksmith label some time ago, only one label can state that they have finally inked Rakim to a deal. Bay Area based SMC Recordings – home of Killer Mike, San Quinn, Mistah Fab, Pastor Troy and others - can now lay claim that the “God” emcee has officially signed with the label.

A release went out stating that “SMC Recordings signs the largest act in the history of the company,” as the signing sends a message to the many labels that have long been after the legendary emcee. What this signing also means is that the long awaited The Seventh Seal album will finally see the light of day – although it won’t be before the end of 2008.

The Seventh Seal is now slated for a Spring 2009 release. This will be Rakim’s first solo album since 1999’s The Master.

Depends what the conditions of his deal are: maybe he's agreed to have a certain percentage of the album produced by SMC's in-house producers. Why the hell did he sign with such a nothing label? Looking forward to hearing what he puts out, but....iono.

I heard he was hard to deal with. It's funny how some Artist who decided to take many years off want to get back in the game and control everything when they do. Nobody cares about what you did back in the day when you want to make a come back...it's about what you're going to do now and if your music is going to sound dated or not.

I think he left one of the only producers that could have made him hot again "Dre". Had he signed with Talib and got some production from Primo I'd say nice switch. It's all about the production when you're an emcee of his caliber......if it's not up to par he'll be mia for another 5 years or possibly the rest of his musical life.

p.s. on another "back in the day" emcee note: MC Shan is releasing a new album, I went to a DJ appreciation joint he had in Atlanta last night. The album will be "hot garbage" lol. He's trying to spit over "dirty south" beatz and he's doing alot of cussing! He could have easily came back and toured off of his old shit and made a grip of money. Why do these guys try to reinvent the wheel?

zactly: you guys are forgetting who we're talking about. A little more respect is due to the god. This isn't some back in the day dude who's out of touch. MC Shan was nice back in the day but not on the same level as Rakim. His classic stuff still blows most modern MCs out the water. Shit, I don't care how difficult he is to work with; let the man do whatever the fuck he wants and give him some fucking hot beats to spit over or let him produce it himself like before.

I love Rakim as an artist, icon yada yada - but he's not doing anything to keep his diehard fanbase even remotely interested in his moves.

He must be excellent with stocks and bonds or real estate because he is like the hip-hop
Halley's Comet. Nas used to be like that too (disappear for 3 years), glad he started treating it like a job or something he actually enjoys doing.

It's a LOT of artists that want to collab with Ra, and that's the sad part. Cormega was trying to get him on the "Fresh" single for his new album and many others.

Ra should've gave us at least 3-4 albums since the Master dropped. I would've been cool with only 1. He still has it obviously but you can't be "the God" all the time, gotta come to work.

Shan could make a good living touring Europe and Asia 6 months outta the year just based on his older work. Take some younger QB artists on the road like Killa Sha, Rapper Noyd, Bars and Hooks, Infamous Mobb, have Littles shoot the DVD and do a QB tour overseas. It's so easy lol.

Some older/true school rappers have INCREDIBLE egos, (worse than New York city playground legends lol) and in their own mind they all feel like "I still got it". If you break it down, maybe the only rappers that are doing BETTER now than when they first came out is U.G.K. (be-4 Pimp passed), The Triple Six Maffy, Fat Joe da Gangsta, and Chill-O-Ski better known as Busta Rhymes.

Slick Rick had the best "comeback" album of all of the pioneers. He actually kept elements of his older production intact and simply added some new flavor to it. Dope album.

The Great Adventures of Slick Rick is a masterpiece, truly ahead of its time - but I liked his last album release - it was a solid listen all the way through.
