Thanks for reading and dropping comments guys it is appreciated ...
I am going to be writing a couple of more articles and hopefully they'll
be published on ILLMuzik as well in the near future.

networking first? skills/music second? whaaa?

Yes, sadly it's true ... If you have a connect you can have an open door instead
of jumping thru hoops to get into the game ... The most talented person could never
have the opportunity to shine because he/she may not have any connects. Just as
there could be a basketball player better than Jordan but that person may not
be well in school and have the right people to motivate him and help him get into
the leauge (Best analogy I could come up with off the top lol).

As a DJ/Producer and also having my own artist (Bob Kennedy) I am seeing all sides
of the networking aspect ... Once again sad but true but with the right mind frame,
initiative, hardwork, and talent anythings possible and I'm sure someone with all of that
can definetly make some noise with out a connect ... NETWORKING is like a game all
in it's own ...

The small town name of the game is wherever hip hop is in your town, be a part of it in every way possible. You have to be twice as persistent as somebody in an industry town to get heard which is the reason why the South is where its at now, because for years they had to create their own lane/market.

Link up with everybody with good work ethic and ambition in your town, and whenever you can take those trips to the big cities. You don't have to live somewhere in order to visit for the weekend and make connects.

What Shadeed said is correct but also ... Don't forget about the "Net Grind". I for one
can speak about the net grind because I live in a city/state where the hip hop scene
is not big at all (New Haven, CT). Most of my accomplishments have been accomplished
via my grind on the net. If you know how to use the net right and the right websites,
message boards, and etc. places to go to and poly it up with people you can def. make
some nice connects and be surprised about who you can link up with just based off the
net. Just 3 days ago I got a drop from Rsonist of The HeatMakerz (Platinum Producers/
Known as Diplomats Producers) just based off the net alone (You can hear it on my
Myspace page). Trust me when I say the net is a VALUABLE TOOL if you know how to
use it right, but it still doesn't defeat getting out there face to face and making contact.

But def. try to be involved in everything in your city if it's small. It's like a gift and a curse.
One because it's so small you can have an easier chance of gettting your name out and
being seen and remembered as to where n a big city you can get lost among all the other
people trying as well. Two because it is a small city there is a lack of a scene/events there
fore it is harder to meet people, link up, do business with others, and etc ...

word. the net grind is my primary means right now. my city has a bad case of the "crabs in a bucket" syndrom. not that "crabs in a bucket" doesnt happen anywhere else. it's just maginfied in smaller towns because just that many more people know you and know of you, thus there's a preconceived notion about you. i have one connect i met over the net, i've reached out to a couple of peeps via myspace. if there's any advise as far as the net grind goes that will help it would definitely be appreciated. Peace.

As far as the net grind goes ... You just have to look everywhere and network online
as you would outside int he real world. Websites tend to have contact info posted you
just have to look for it. Hit up message boards such as IllMuzik's forum (Knowing the
right ones where people who are real good connects post on is key). On websites look
for the artists who get featured as unsigned hype, about to blow, upcoming talent, and
etc. sort of features (Those usually have contact info at the bottom) and try to link
up with those people. Look for artists who are working on projects with a budget and
hit them up and talk it up with them. Once you find the right scene and hop in and
start talking to people it's get easier (It's never easy but a few people lead to a few
more people and so forth, it's def. good to know people). Don't think for a second that
only knowing someone on or thru the net means nothing ... Someone who I only know
thru the net helps me out all the time an vice versa. He has gotten my tracks with
artists on plenty of mixtapes for me and in return I produce tracks for him and a few
of his artists and were cool (Basic Networking 101 : Indirect Favor for Favor).

It's sort of just lain old luck too ... Email the right person and you get something.
There was a website with an email for Tom Gist of The Diplomats Manager and I
said ah what the hell let me try it. I did and the manager hit me back, liked my
work, and put me thru directly to Gist and now I can send Gist beats to hear directly.
Also gt on the phone with people it makes it more personal and develops more of
a relationship ... People I work with thru the net get on phone and we chop it up
and talk business and sometimes just regular off topic things. My artist Bob Kennedy
lives in IL and I live in CT, we never met in person but hit each other up to keep
each other psoted on whast going and just to chop it up and see whats good sometimes.

It's just like the real world ... You have to get out there and hit people up and
start talking to find out whos who, whats what, wheres the best spots, and etc.
