Members of the Texas State Board of Education gave preliminary approval Friday to remove significant areas of curriculum from civil rights and global politics and replace them with conservative historic figures and beliefs. Courses that would be affected by these changes include social studies, history and economics.
One of the subjects debated amongst the lawyers, dentists and publishers, who make up the board, was whether or not Hip Hop should be taught as a cultural movement. According to the Huffington Post, right wing members voted that Hip Hop should be deleted as a requirement and that students should not be taught about its cultural impact across not only the United States, but the world.

Conservatives also approved to have a sociological focus on institutional racism and its presence in American society banned from the books, as well as removing important references of Latino and Hispanic figures throughout history.

The Texas State Board of Education approved of the new expectations with a 10-5 vote, and a final decision is expected to be made in May, but not before holding an open forum where the public can produce additional arguments and even possibly, different amendments to stop some of the changes from being implemented.

If the amendments are approved, the changes to the content will affect learning nationwide because most school textbooks are published in Texas and would be taught to millions of students for the next 10 years.

"i just love how these stuffed shirts are always votin on shit, yet most of them have never experienced, or even been a part of, whatever theyre votin on... i see this type of shit ALL the time."

Same problem with rulings about copyright and technology, some 80 year old judge rules on something he has no idea about. That is just wrong!

yeah it's a whitewash but it's minor compared to the ridiculous omissions and additions they've been doing since last year. trying to get rid of or diminish people like cesar chavez (they called him just a farmer among other things), thurgood marshall, booker t, mlk, etc and trying to add newt gingrich and phyliss schlafly and other right wing bs and revisionism is disgusting.

too bad it hasn't gotten more attention despite the influence texas has on the textbooks across the u.s. get ready to read about the greatness of the american conservative movement and the deification of ronny reagan while dismissing the already lacking history and contributions of native, black, latino, asian, etc and the minor blip of 'social justice', in a school near you

note: some of the really fucked up shit some of these a-holes said during the televised public debate/deliberation can be seen on youtube, tpm and crooks and liars

Wow! I got this off the Huffington Post...just a couple of excerpts:
- Numerous attempts to add the names or references to important Hispanics throughout history also were denied, inducing one amendment that would specify that Tejanos died at the Alamo alongside Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. Another amendment deleted a requirement that sociology students "explain how institutional racism is evident in American society."
- Teachers in Texas will be required to cover the Judeo-Christian influences of the nation's Founding Fathers, but not highlight the philosophical rationale for the separation of church and state. Curriculum standards also will describe the U.S. government as a "constitutional republic," rather than "democratic," and students will be required to study the decline in value of the U.S. dollar, including the abandonment of the gold standard.
- Democrats did score a victory by deleting a portion of an amendment by Republican Don McLeroy suggesting that the civil rights movement led to "unrealistic expectations for equal outcomes."

Word.

what do you do if you dont like your own nations history?....
change it.
Its fucking crazy, not just the hip hop part but also some of the other parts.
Do all the nuts in america come from Texas?

Yes... They do.

Looks like the white folks are getting sick of shit and trying to take it all back..lol
What better way than to deny reality and history, it worked for Bush , who is also frm Texas.
I think he was the one who also said that history would find him in the right.
Looks like it will if these people have anything to do with it.
They should add that WWII took 50 years for us to win as well so their "boy" doesnt look like an idoit for not finding a small group of people in the world and killing them in a whole lot longer period of time .

I know for a fact hiphop had changed everything in my life let alone the world.
It isnt about just the rapping either , its the whole culture manages to bring true heads ( not thugs) together no matter where they are from in a peaceful way to celebrate an awsome artform in all of its many facets

a little more info:

Texas Board of Education cuts Thomas Jefferson out of its textbooks.

The Texas Board of Education has been meeting this week to revise its social studies curriculum. During the past three days, “the board’s far-right faction wielded their power to shape lessons on the civil rights movement, the U.S. free enterprise system and hundreds of other topics”:

– To avoid exposing students to “transvestites, transsexuals and who knows what else,” the Board struck the curriculum’s reference to “sex and gender as social constructs.”

– The Board removed Thomas Jefferson from the Texas curriculum, “replacing him with religious right icon John Calvin.”

– The Board refused to require that “students learn that the Constitution prevents the U.S. government from promoting one religion over all others.”

– The Board struck the word “democratic” from the description of the U.S. government, instead terming it a “constitutional republic.”

As the nation’s second-largest textbook market, Texas has enormous leverage over publishers, who often “craft their standard textbooks based on the specs of the biggest buyers.” Indeed, as The Washington Monthly has reported, “when it comes to textbooks, what happens in Texas rarely stays in Texas.”

-DJ Carella
Update Following repeated failed attempts to add figures in Hispanic history to the textbooks, one board member, Mary Helen Berlanga, stormed "out of the meeting late Thursday night, saying, 'They can just pretend this is a white America and Hispanics don’t exist.'"
