Swing on beats

I'm trying to get back into producing beats again, after a 6month hiatus lol

Was wondering if you peeps could give me some tips on applying swing on beats

I've found putting just a tiny amount on hi-hats (every 1/8th) gives it a nice feel, not too robotic. But when i put even the smallest amount of swing on the snares it just doesn't sound right

How do you peeps use swing and do you apply it to every element of the drum track or only to certain parts (eg kicks, hihats only etc...)

I've only ever applied swing to hihats or ride cymbals - but thats just because most of the time I find stuff doesn't need to have any swing on the snares or kicks to make it sound a little more organic.

Swing is a matter of choice..50% means that where the note falls in time say you have a 4/4 time signature....notes 1-4 if you use quarter notes they will fall dead on where the metronome strikes, when you start applying swing you begin to move the notes position where they fall in a measure either slightly left or right of the actual timing... when you are speaking in terms of a drum pattern it gives you that humanized or natural feel ......if you use tru Skool or a lot of hip hop as your template from say the 90's and using the classic gear like say and SP1200......53% is a number you see used a lot that people might find is utilized......a lot of beats nowadays don't even use any Swing because they don't follow the traditional drum patterns you would expect to see....if you experiment with swing on a basic drum pattern....starting at 53% and toggle up to like say 60% and up you get a Jazzy swing or feel to the pattern....to some it might even resemble a shuffle.....anyhow man good luck and go with what you think sounds good, don't just use swing to use it though....find a purpose...

Yep .... 52%-58% is the range of swing I use on my MPC 3000.

But for me the key to getting a human feel for the groove is keeping the drums locked in at 52% and then shifting the musical instruments behind the drums so they drag a little. On my MPC I set it 2-3 later.
