Personally I don't do much with vocals, mainly just use a multiband compressor to put a bit off overall compression into the vocal and also to reduce plosives and to de-ess. Sometimes use a noise gate too if theres a bit of background coming through.

Cubase is good for vocals vst dynamics compression and a lil reverb brings the vocals out...I just got cool edit 2.0 and don't know anything about it

First of all, don't say mastering the vocals cuz mastering is done in high-end studios, wut we call mastering at home, even if you have that pro tool and those waves plug-in is pre-mastering.

But to get your vocal to sound radio-like, apply a low-cut of 100hz with a eq or a filter to cut the mic rumble, boost a lil bit from 5k to 15 k, reduce a lil after 15k, then pass in a compressor with gentle settings to give your voice that broadcast feeling, after in third, use a de-esser to reduce NOT CUT those sssss sounds from your words. always de-esse at the end, never before eq. So the order is : eq/filter low cut (completely cut) and hi boost (gentle), compression, and de-essing. Then ya might add delay, echo reverb, or wathever creative plug-in you might wanna use.

That's it for a good sounding vocal. Always keep in mind the GIGO rule : garbage in, garbage out. So the more your original takes will be good the more the will be at the end of the process.
