yo whats the deal with having a split harddrive?

i just got a new laptop and its split into two harddrives each one is 17.6 gb.

when i install programs they automatically go oin the c drive. so i have about 5 gb left on the c drive and the d drive is completely empty.

will it make my computer faster if i put my samples n shit in the d drive so there is more space in the c drive or doesnt it matter?

should i just use the c drive untill its full and then use the d drive when needed?

or put certain things on c and certain things on d?

thanks

So u actually have '2' harddrives???.....Or do u have '1' harddrive thats already partitioned???..........If its 2 harddrives, im really not sure why they would slave 2 together to make one big one?...But, if its jus 1 and they already partitioned it for u u can jus do what u asked and put like all yer music files on the D drive that way u dont max out yer C, and i assume it should run a little faster? Also, if u dont like tha way it is partitioned, then u can re-partition it with a prgm like partition magic...that prgms awsome and it lets u merge or reformatt any drive with tha push of a button.

Yeah I got the same type of deal... I'm not sure it really matters, but I keep all my samples and FL on the same drive... works out fine...

thanks for the help fellas.

yeah sorry im a bit stupid when it comes to computers. i guess its not 2 harddrives. i reckon its one but partitioned.

ill put my samples on the d drive and leave the c drive for programs n shit. if it runs fine ill leave it and if it doesnt ill get that partition magic thing.

and yeah im stoked that i got this laptop. cos me 1700 AUD and it has a dvd burner aswell! all the other laptops with dvd burners were way over 2 gs but this one was cheap and phat. laptops are the shit. although i still gotta work out what ima do for a soundcard and recording n shit. someone made a thread about it recently so ill check that. oh and i think i might need a mouse cos the finger tracking system is a bit slow and not as precise. maybe i need to get used to it. maybe i need to stop blabbing.

peace

Honestly, i dunno on what card u should buy, i jus seen them adverstised in computer mags before?
40 gigs is good. Thats easily enough to make make plenty of songs and have audio files backed up, but ur gonna wanna try and invintory alot of your songs and samples after theyve been on tha computer for a while or when tha drive starts to get too full and jus burn them on a CD...thats what i usually do on my girls laptop...
One thing u might consider is looking for a RAM upgrade for that sucker on tha internet...shop around and do a little research and find out how much u can get another 256 for, also, u need to find out how much your computer can actually upgrade regarding RAM. Some laptops will only let u put in so much...Just a thought tho, because when your processing all those effects and having multi-track recordings it starts to add up on that RAM real fast.
