I bought the new model...the sp-505...I took it back within a day...it fuggin loads samples very slow....so I dunno how Madlib uses the sp-303 but I know a few people that make some dope beats with it.....
This article is an excerpt about Madlib...along with a link to the whole article

He's been doing a lot of his recent work on a relatively cheap $300 sampler, the Boss SP-303 Dr. Sample. Madlib wants people to know that he has the ability to rock more hip-hop styles than you've already heard from him with his 805 crew of the Lootpack. "I can do all that like Southern style, Timbaland, Mannie Fresh - all that stuff. That's easier than sampling to me," he says. And then there's some "experimental" things he's done that he thinks people just aren't really ready for.

yo I got the sp505 and would recommend that as a cheap alll in one unit to get into production, or a korg es-1.

that's a good choice especially if you got good samples its way faster to load say Fruity loops or another software sampler and there's not a lot really special about the sp-303 sampling engine or anything like say....the mpc or sp12XX vintage samplers, so for that I see software maybe being the better choice.....I mean I don't know how fast the samples load in the 303 but I had a mpc and an rs-7000 and I was completely dissapointed with the sp-505 because the samples don't load very quickly and you have to do a lot of tweaking with the GATeS and filters, and I also had the ol sp-808 about 2 or three years ago and I thought that was an ok sampler...
