Cold hit me up today, and told me he got us lined up for our first show... we will be opening up for Westside Connection's Dub C. (WC)

Hey, It is a good start no?

We'll see how it goes, because our style music is far from his...lol.

This being our first "official" show, does anyone got any pointers?

Whoa! Good luck on that one homie. I'm almost sure Dub C fans will be in the building thick. If u guys pull off a good showing without performing something in the same vein "musically" as he is it'll be saying a lot. I guess as long as it's "westcoast" sounding you'll be iiight!

yeah, we got some WestCoast tracks that we might perform, it's 2 weeks away...so we'll be going through our catalog.

Well, part of the problem with that is the crowd if not open minded might not be feeling you because they arent wanting to hear you they want to hear Dub C type of material.Thats prolly just my city though so forget that ..lol

As far as stage, remember, once up there you are acting, so dont be nervous BE vice verse.
Also dont sweat being nervous everybody is.

All arm motions and everything should be exagerated and animated, the people in the back have to be able to see and feel you too.

If the are going to be both of you on stage pick which side you want then own that side (thats if the mics have cords) that way you wont get tangled up walking back and forth.
If there are no cords then you can switch but its good to own a side.

Interact with the crowd.

Interact with each other.

Dont just mumble and shuffle up there, people came to see a preformance, remember on stage your an entertainer!

If you can do shit that makes them remember you for more than just the music.A gimick will work, and being white is no longer a gimick.
Dont use fake guns as props.

Oh DONT cup your hands over the mic and shout into it, this is a bitch for the sound man and it doesnt actually help you be heard any better it hurts, I dont care how cool Dub C looks doing it, they have their own sound people.

IMPORTANT: Get a sound check, I have been screwed countless times by not having one, you WILL suck if you dont get one, it never fails.

If you cant get one or something goes wrong, do NOT yell at the crowd, you cant win that argument.

Adapt well onstage and no one will know if you said the same line twice or any of that shit.
Have fun!
Congrads!
Can you tell I played before?

From my personal experience! Don't count on that sound check. If there's sound engineer he'll get the main act or acts levels set and he won't care much about the openers. Doesn't mean u won't still rock that shit..just don't count on it or ask for it. If they offer it take it of course. And if the sound fails or the mics in general "keep doing your thang". The crowd loves an act that lets nothing stop the show.

Where is the show at?

It's actually in my small town called Hemet. It's kinda funny he's coming here, but Snoop came here once and rocked a show.

This is basically going to be a small venue, and Cold is real cool with the promoter....so he asked him if we could open for them and the guy was like "go for it".... He likes our material so that helped. We are basically trying to get our feet wet with performing.

a couple Questions.
we don't have a dj, so does anyone have any suggestions/tips? And also we are planning on closing with a song that has a female vocalist on the hook, but she wont be there. You think this would be a bad idea to just throw some adlibs over the recorded hook, and roll with it?

That aint too far away from SD. I may come out to it. How much are tickets?

On the note about the DJ, I'm sure you guys can find someone in the area if you ask around.
On the vocalist note, I dont see why not. If its a good track then its a good a track no matter what

What I do is goa head and put together your show in PT or whatever you use now.
That way w/e fx you want to use between songs will be there.(in other words you can simulate having a dj without having a dj)
I make one long song out of the imported instrumentals in the order that you wanna rock em.

This way you have one song on one cd that you give to whoever is in charge of mashing play, and tell them to just hit play and leave it. Trust me if they can they will fuck that up too, but at least whenever your songs come on you will still have control over how your show is gonna go down.

Basically as far as any song for show yes keep whatever hook you have on there and just shout it out yourself over it as well.
I usually leave adlibs in as well on the instrumentals , this way if you fuck up at all or run out of breath or forget your lyrics you should have that adlib in there to either cover for you for a split sec to catch your breath or it will remind you where you are at in the song.

I dont know how much time you will have but if its real short ever and you want maximum exposure of songs I take snippits of say three verses from 3 diff songs and put a backspin sound inbetween each song to denote a song change and then run it like that.

Just more shit to think about, anything else?

we are actually really close to SD... That would be dope if you could come out. I'm not sure the price of admission...but I'll find out the specific details and post it up.

and @ Relic; I think that's all the questions for now, thanks man.

np, we should have more advice on live shows on here anyway..
Long long time ago in the far far away time, I used to play all the time, and it was good, mostly.
We did get booed the hell off stage worse case scenario while opening for Dana Dane once!
It was the worst feeling ever, and it was all about the lack of a soundcheck.
Then one of the MC's cussin out the crowd didnt help at all! LOL

Remember PRACTICE first as well!

I say the 2 things you GOTTA do is:

- Get your act together and practice (if you can, you can practice the whole thing in front of friends to have an idea of how it goes...)

- Interact with the crowd. They came to be entertained... not to listen to some songs, but to see a music concert... get the difference?

I always find that an MC how just raps and think that people will react JUST because the beat is nice look ridiculous on stage.

OH, and don't forget to have fun with it... IT SHOWS!
