i really didnt know wat that was for until i watched a tutorial on war beats. so my questions is it always neccessary to use it on all beats or just on certain patterns in the song? also the snap should that always be on line i usually change it to edit in piano roll then i would put it back on line?

use your ear, its not always necessary, try beats with no quantize using only the metronome as practice to make your drum patterns sound like you want them..just a note...a real drummer has a click track in their ear sometimes to keep in time in a studio a lot of times but generally quantize is something thats just impossible for a real drummer to apply so their hits and patterns gonna fall into some crazy swing and shidd not following the grid and snap exactly....but generally a good drummer can swing and stay on beat very close to a quantized drum pattern.

It's definitely not necessary to use the swing function on all beats. I think it depends on your style and the type of hip hop or other music you're producing. Swing beats (moved to the right) remind me of premier and pete rock - that ole' boom bap. Move it to the left and you got more Mobb Deep, harder new york flavor. That's what I tend to think of when I'm making a beat and then decide depending the type of beat I want to make. The ill sh*t is when you have a beat that goes back and forth - see Jay-Z/Just Blaze's P.S.A. on the black album.

i manually place every note of everything. Put the quantize off and try clicking it in. The variation of not having the same exact distance everytime can get you more feel along as you create your own swing. also varying the volume can create a swing feel if you do it right. Swing to taste lol.
