"Anybody have any nice links where I could read up some basics on chopping cuz I have trouble getting the chops to fit in a bar?"

Most phrases can be chopped without much noticeable distortion to fit one or two bar phrases. As for general tips: if I have trouble fitting stuff into bars my personal strategy usually is to make the chop right where an individual note begins. Then I snap all the pieces in place on a playlist...Don't be afraid to cut a part of the sample short. Also, don't be afraid to let the sample breathe a little bit; you don't need to have the sample going for every beat of a bar. One thing I also like to do is load the sample into multiple channels so I can play around with layering, etc. Pretty simple, on second thought you probably already know most of that stuff.

Thanks guys. Gotta go do some digging now.

To get it to fit into the bar you either need to adjust the tempo (making sure you've got the right time signature as well) or time stretch the sample to fit your desired tempo.

im about to dead the whole argument

why not... just do what the mood entails? some days, sampling may not be cutting it for you. other days, you may not be composing well. why not just let the "where youare" dictate the "were you are going"?

dont just settle for one or the other to focus on; if you are interested in pursuing both, then do so, and do each as your mood fits.

you dont need mad piano skills to compose. am not that much of a piano player but i can still do some ok stuff without the mozart skills. i say keep trying to master your composition skills but dont ignore your sampling either, unless you prefer one over the other. dont make an excuse on waiting on the lessons.

EVERYONE and their dogs is gonna have a different opinion on this...as mentioned earlier "it all on feel" THATS THE BEST COMPOSITION IMHO...you have got to FEEL your music whether samping or composing...i hate that..cuz sampling is composing..but you follow me.

Take it back to the virgin era of hiphop before it was corrupted by the media. Hip Hop was created by lack of resources in the ghetto...poverty stricken schools didnt have money for music instruction, kids folks didnt have the funds for music class, nor the money for instruments. So what did they do...well...NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION. Kids took two TT and a mixer, pops old records and COMPOSED MUSIC!! Hip Hop is all about simplicity. Sometimes we judge ourselves to strongly...ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO CRITISIZE AND CREATE ON THE SAME LOBE...they cancel each other out

Beethoven was deaf..so he cut the legs off of his Grand and put his ear to the floor...FEELING....now thats dedication...and true COMPOSING...IMHO
