can someone explain in laymens terms what royalties are please...

i have a small idea, i think its when you get a percentage of whats sold instead of a cash payment upfront for the beat.

thanks.

nah, royalties are what you get paid for your shit being played on radio and ish. for example, say you get a track on a radio stations playlist, everytime they play the track you get a certain amount of money, which is all added up and collected by a company, i think its ascap but someone else will have to confirm the name of the specfic company for that. you have to sign up with the company for them to keep track of your shit for you. not everyone actually does that shit, and i think that's stupid, cause its just free money for doing nothing.

it is still royalitys lets say you make a beat for somebody and their are signed to a major record lable, so you say i get 3% of you rolalitys of each track you made so say they went double platium and you did 3 songs on that album, their pay check will be 600 million and you get 3 percent of that and your check will be 180 million, i don't think the numbers is right and i don't have a good caculater so if it is wrong somebody help me out.

you should do a search, we've had some indepth issues in the past covering this subject, good ones too. Good enough to clear your questions anyway as far as I can remember.

LISTEN UP, Listen up....ok here's a real example

IN 3 months say your song is played 300 times (clubs, radio, XM radio or other approved reporting method)

each play gets 1$

your royalty contract thru your publisher (ASCAP, BMI or SESAC etc) says you as the producer get 50% of the total amount that your record spins earn in that quarter or 3month period

then the artist has a royalty contract too if he was registered with your publisher and was credited on the song, he wrote all of the lyrics...he gets the other 50%

so each of you will split $300.oo for that quarter....

you get a check for 150 dollars and the artist gets a check for the other 150.00

but it gets more complicated....say you produced it and two rappers wrote to it?

you would still get the 150.00 but the two writers/lyracists would split the 150.00

suppose you actually ghost wrote the lyrics? and made the track?
theoretically you can get the entire 300.00 even though the rappers performed it....
their performance doesn't count as writing the song......all you have to do is make a lil contract
and pay them say 50 dollars or whatever and pay them for their time......see that lil part there is where an artist can legally be jacked.......but you don't have to give them any of the writing credits because you ghost wrote........

NOW that is a simple set up if its just you and your artist.....and I used how ASCAP deals with publishing and royalties.

A record label can sign you and then they can make you sign things that can lessen those base amounts and they take a piece of your publishing......

Does this help?

POINTS and Splits on the other hand is a whole different ballgame...that is when your song along with other producers on an album must split certain amounts between everyone and how well the album does overall..........................

another free jewel that I will drop, and I am not just telling you this info off the top of my head I have been attending all kinds of label related events, dealing with the actual organizations like ASCAP (which I have been a member for 4 years now) that actually have panels where they answer all of your questions......and I paid lots of dough to find out about how a lot of it works....so take my free advice and build off of that.....!!!!
