Yea Man I rented that movie from my job last year. The way it ended was crazy!! I especially thought the part were Marlon was in Jail sucking on his thumb thinking about how disapointed his mother would be was truely deep. If you think about it, it's kind of depicting the way young men in gerneral have a subconcious connection with there mother and are always striving to please them in some way.

right....from a student of films point of view.....

for me the film was shit.

The story had so many holes in it, the character werent explained properly and their progression was weak, there was no comment on why the characters did what they did.

It was aranofskys first film, and i feel he was trying too hard.

He was shoving imagary in your face, and the editing wasnt smooth and didnt aid or tell the story very well, IMO.

The montages were good at first, but got boring because each one was approached in exactly the same way.....

There is NO WAY, his mum would get that skitzed out either, (Even tho the mothers story was far and away the best)

With the guy who looses his arm: now i know A LOT of smack heads, and their is no way, they would carry on pinning into an arm that was going gangrene, NO ONE IS THAT STUPID, really they are not...

The black guy was weak and it seems his character was rushed, and did not have a cogent "back story" to back up his desires...if you wanna get rich of selling drugs, SELL COKE or CRACK

For me, they did not show the descent into being that ADDICTED at all, suddenly they went from being recreational user to full blown smack head...

Darren ARANOFSKY, IMO just wanted to shock, and he didnt do that very well either....the acting was weak on all fronts, save the mum, and as already mentioned the story wasd shit and weak.

IF you wanna see a good film about smack heads their lives and what drives them to what they do, watch the BASKETBALL DIARYs, a much more comprehensive film, showing they dangers of so called GATEWAY DRUGS, such as coke, and legal presciption drugs. THis is probally because it is a true story, told by a real life smack head....also Leo Di Caprio and Mark Wahlberg own, in that film...its drk edgy and as true to life as i could imagine, knowing and considering, some smack heads that i know are very close good friends of mine, and unfortunately having dabbled in the black arts myself....

It's all true what you say, but they're kids...naive ones too so it could all happen but then again it's a movie...bit less of the usual entertaining...

Also, the black guy did honey's too...not just selling dope but aquiring honeys via dope.

Editing was like Lock Stock, sequenced n synced like when the Ami's gets asked; " Anything to declare ? Yes, dont go to england!" bam! comes the sequence/next scene.

Other than this, there's not much to compare with... Traffic was nice, but nothing like this.

Speakin of moms n drugs, You must've seen Twin town lol

I thought the movie was powerful. The editing and shots used were unique comepared to most movies and definately pushed the concept od the movie further. AND THE MUSIC!!! The music IMO was perfectly scored to this picture. That theme song just leaves a disturbing picture in your mind, and mixed with the graphic visuals I thought the director got his point across quite well.

Haze, Now I'm not a film student, but at Full Sail I know a lot of film studetns and I understand how you guys are tought to critically pick apart movies like that. Which is fine, but at the same time, look at the big picture. Did Aranofsky get his point across? To me, I think yes. I felt deeply disturbed after watching the last 20 minutes of the movie, that I felt sick to my stomache. I think that Aranofsky meant to shock us. You watch these 3 kids and mom, go from living normal average lives, with bright futures (maybe, at least for the girl), to completely ruining them in every possible aspect in a matter of 9 months or so.

I respect your opinion Haze, but I don't think I agree.

Word, common people dont analyse the movie, it has full effect on them but I understand, I mean, I cant even listen to track normally without dissambling the score and pointing out what they did and by which means...

THAT NOT ENTERTAINING, let alone enjoying the material...

But... HAze, what would you say about 2001: space oddessey ? Same concept, in your face...

space oddessy:

ya i liked this piece, i dont think it is in your face either, i think the editing really aids the story...

the story is a bit wack and cliched now, but that is where the killer computer/robot concept really came from....

i watched it the other day actually, and was really surprised that the fx didnt really look that dated at all....

i mean it rambles on and on, but HAL is dark (i made a track called that it is on stresswons soundclick page) the acting is understated, and it works really well...i love the use of wide angle lens, and the circular room is a real headfuck....

the soundtrack makes the film, same as requiem (some guy who used to post on here made a beat with that requiem sample, it was fucking sick, first PM i ever send on this site was a congrats to him for that track) but kubrik is a god nuff said....cept EYES wide shut, that was shit.....

i mean i am VERY HARD TO PLEASE...i thought the lord of the ring trilogy was absolute shit (fell out with a couple of ppl for that opinion) and i thought sin city had a really wack story as well (visually amazing)

I just dont think i like aranofsky that much, PI was good, but again it was in your face, and the rigid face steadicam shots of his walking around, got tedious, as did the fucking montages again (ie- the lock montages)

i think he just tries to be too "arty" kubrik on the otherhand got the balance of art and story telling perfectly.....

swivel - fair play mate everyone is entitled to their opinion, and i didnt mean to sound up myself either as the first line of the previous post might suggest, i just think aranofsky needs to forget about the art, and concentrate on the story more.....

fair enough...I actually really love Kubrick films as well. And I didn't think Eyes Wide Shut was really all that bad. It made you think a little bit. I like some sort of cerebral stimulation when I watch movies lol. I really need to see PI now lol

I agree with you on Sin City tho. FANTASTIC visuals and cinematics. But the story was a little messy. I know it's based off a bunch of shorter novel/stories or whatever. Graphical Novels? lol. But i think putting that concept into a movie is a little difficult to achieve. Sin City had like 3 or 4 different plot lines that BARELY intertwined, so i was as if you were watching 3 or 4 short films all in the same cinematic perspective lol.

As for Lord Of The Rings, YOU'RE CRAZY!!! All three were pulled off with perfection. Amazing visuals, great acting IMO, incredible story (Thanks Tolkien)...I thought they were brilliant movies, and I own the extended edition box set. Thats about 12 hours of viewing pleasure!! lol
