ok...... I WISH I HAD A 2INCH TAPE MACHINE..... i used to sorta intern in one of the major recording studios in manhatten, and they used these dope ass tape machines (dont know the names) but i know they used 2 inch tape.

i would record vocals to the tape and record my mixes on the tape, just to get that "warm" sound.

Ive only used the reel2reel's with 2 channels. But ive seen the ones with more channels then that. I wanna try one some time. Id rather use tape then a hard-drive.

We have a Fostex D16, we use it to record the drums and it sound good. We did a runn once with a tight bpm schedule and the drummer on click track. After converting them track outs through a few ADC's(Fostex, Tascam, the result goes unnoticed. Just my point that it doesn't matter but that's only through this setup. I've done a @ random jam session with a with 8 chnls and master out direct to a Sony 2trk DAT. That's nice without a fuzz, but the tapes get expensive these days, so when we use em its for sample purpose, not for the customer recording.

Note: These are bitches when it comes to maintainance, no service engineer likes to touch these machines.

The only thing I found a reel to reel useful for is recording alot of hours of music on. I don't like the trouble, the time, nor the effort required in using one in a production setup. I had 2 of them, a Pioneer RT-550 which used the BIG 12" reels and a AKAI GX-77 (`which I still have but never use).

On that note...I did see a cat use 2 of them to mix with (without a mixer) on one of the OLD DMC competitions...that ish was halarious!

if your using your computer or a hard disk recorder to record like i am then you will only need a reel 2 reel tape recorder to record a stereo mix. the tape machine will give it that warm sound and give your mix more volume without distorting. they sell 2 chanel tape machines just for stereo mix so you dont have to go out and get no 24 chanel tape machine.
