I just knocked off this Tascam 788 for a lil shorty I 'm trying to raise up to be a MC so he can record at home and I don;t have to go pick him up , stop putting in work to take him home before it gets to late and all that. What I wanna do is load it up with tracks save them on the hard drive then take it to him and let him go to work. What I found out is that this lil damn thing only records two tracks at a time. This is totally different than how I've been recording previously with my VS1680.

How do you track out 8 tracks on a machine like this.

I would like to put the drum on say two tracks , then other sound on the rest of the track.

How do you seperate the track if it only records two at a time and still be insync when you want to add the remaining tracks.

is it possibl to midi both machines? if so set 1 as master and the other to slave and set the master clock to internal and the slave clock to midi. the slave should then sync to the master.

The only time I ever used Midi was with my MPC , I had this yamaha tone generator that I controlled with the MP, So I.m not all up on it.

let me see if i can help. just as i posted earlier. being that you can only record 2 tracks at a time you will have to sync both machines and run several passes to spread all of your tracks across the recorder. like this:
first pass record track 1
second pass record track 2
third pass record track3 ..... and so on. but both machines have to be locked. another way is to do it manually. record the click with the first track then use that click as a starting refference. when you record your 2nd track start record after the count in.

hope this helped you

Soundboy2:

The Tascam 788 is an extremely powerful digital recording studio from TEAC. It is a comprehensive all-in-one digital recorder with graphic non-linear editing, multiple undos, and various MIDI controls as well. I find it difficult to believe that it would only record two inputs at once. There must be some inconsistencies in your routing, or perhaps a misunderstanding of the situation.

From my understanding you have A thru D inputs, which can simultaneously record. Are you mistaking the inputs for the AUX inputs (which in that case, you only have two?) If you activate all the mic inputs whilst recording, you should have no problems. Perhaps you are confusing the mic and monitoring modes of each track?

UNLESS, you have multiple tracks in a TRITON or MPC, which in that case they would each have to be run separately to a different track from the synthesiser. In that case, you must play each separate portion of the mix onto the tracks you desire, then repeat the process for another instrument onto a different track. You have wave editing capabilities in your TASCAM that can help you sync the recording. Furthermore, for more accuracy, you have the TASCAM control the clock of your other machines, and then queue the synths to a specific counter numerical indicator where the track would start. It should not cause you problems.

Also, remember that you are not constrained to 8 tracks. If you mix well on the TASCAM, you can bounce and have up to 250 "virtual" tracks. This involves "ping-ponging" tracks across each other. With up to 99 undos on the TASCAM, this shouldn't be as mind-retching as it was on analogue gear. Best of luck!

Sincerely,
God
