This problem can be fixed... in fact it's quite easy to fix. I use my closet. But your gonna need to do some filtering. I don't know what you got so I can't direct you... Hit me back, and let me know what your working with...

The problem with recording in a closet is that it make the vocal sound like in a box, so the recording sounds cheap. You should try a bigger room at least 4 by 4 and apply some materials like i said it can be temporary, like hanging carpets or pillows, foam or the best and faster, thick blankets. It should sounds closer to a nice vocal booth.

I know i already said before in another quote that some recordings been made in closet but you should only do this if you really cant do anything else. It really make the vocal boxy and you gotta camoflage that sound when you mix after, so i'm sayin it's better to get a clean and clear vocal and try to avoid closets.

You can use whatever material that damp the sound : carpet, isolation foam, eggshell foam, etc. You can even paint the material with spray can gently, and it will not change the absorbtion of your material. There is no straight rule to how build a vocal booth, only your ears and the sound you want. And hell yeah it's cheaper and still efficient to make yourself your booth. Plus you get really experienced from it. Go check your local Hardware depot and you might find materials you didnt though to use!
