"mono means centered... right down the middle ... no panning"

"mono is one ... dead center ... or only one side at a time"

Umm no that is totally incorrect you can pan a mono signal to the left or right fine where ever you want..

All mono means is that it is a single signal where stereo is 2 different signals.

Just try it in your DAW software. Record a mono signal then pan away.

You should ask yourself... why record in stereo when I have a guy spitting his lyrics on 1 mic... there is no need for stereo recording, a mouth can only send out 1 sound at a time... and your mic will only record the same signal twice if you record in stereo with one mic. That's why you should record in mono. You'll have one centered signal that (if you want), you can pan to the left or right.

If you're recording some other kind of instrument that does more than 1 sound (like a drum or a band) then stereo recording is usefull, cuz you want people to hear the difference between what's going on in the left or the right of the instrument or the band...

When you're on a program to mix your vocals with your beat (like Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, or FL Studio...), the whole beat is supposed to be stereo, but the vocal will be in mono. The mix of both will be in STEREO... You can pan the vocals left and right if you want...
