what do you mean his voice changes? Just the volume? Is it because he's swaying back and forth or really gettin into it? What mic are you using? Preamp?
The quality of the mic and preamp if you have one will get you a clearer quality and will just make it easier for the compressor to work its job so i'm just wondering.

so you're trying to buy a software compressor? or are you trying to find one in whatever program you are working with..

Any good recording software should have a stock compressor. It may be shitty depending on what software you are using but it may do the trick. Are you using a booth to record in?

you would have some horrific latency issues. i could be wrong as well though... maybe if you had a really good DAW setup??

with any daw that supports recording audio, it records strait to the audio track. no extra stuff, so i dont see how a plugin (which u apply to the track) would work in real time of you recording it.
wait wait. I think i know of a way. in adobe audition 2.0, in multitrack view click on the FX tab so u can apply effects to each channel. and just go in and apply the waves c1 to the channel u plan to record on. and turn it on/make it active. Then when u record, it will be doin its work,.
of course, with soundcards that have direct monitoring, u wont hear this effects until u play it back.

u prolly need a hardware compressor ... or make your daw run the voice thru the effects before it prints .. but it sounds like your main problem is bad mic technique ... it all starts with the vocalists technique ... have him stand back when his voice gets loud and lean in a little when he lowers his voice .. a real good take dont require that much processing after its recorded .. just working with the artist to get the take right should take care of that problem ....

i agree with ash. vocal technique is a huge part of it. if you still wanted to go with processing while recording, i'd get a dedicated hardware compressor to do the job. Just make sure you dont over compress the vocals on the way cuz its all permanent. It'd be better to compress it twice very lightly then once strongly.
