I been thinking about this a lot, and it's really just an opinion, but i been listening to people like k-os, talib, mos, jurassic 5, etc, and these kats are so ill and barely get that play the deserve. these people are my definition of "real hip-hop" so to speak, i know a lot of us on here is sick of that commercial trash. so what is your definition of "real hip-hop" (in your opinion)

Good Question,,,

I would say there is no "real" Hip Hop! I mean you can always go back to the 4 elements, but Hip Hop has evolved since then. In my own opinion,,,I think if you live the culture, then thats that! Now the actual culture is the real issue. It aint clothes, or how you act,,not even how you speak. There's Hip Hop(culture) and then Hip Hop(music)! DIG? As far as real MCEES??? Then the above mentioned are definitly true. Not concerned with fame and loot as much as for the art form! Now thats an ARTIST! These cats gettin heavy rotation on your local radio station,,,these cats are in it for money, period. Plus they suck...Not to "toot my own horn" but name any rapper on the radio and I am lyrically superior!!!!!! No shit,,,I really am! LOL:D

i think real Hiphop represents the original messages of Hiphop. (the things it represented when it was invented)

the original messages can be found in my post "hiphop history month"

"WHATS REAL"

Real is in the ear of the beholder,

From speaking on how I struggle to get over

To this strap in this holster,

How you do it dawg? , speaking to Pacs Poster

So now you question the realness, the thrillness

You never saw a block of light yellow shit,

So I know their is no way you could feel this

So this is for the cats on that back street boy

Smoking, snorting drinking listening to this bass and beat to find their joy

Stay in your world and I'll reside in mine,

But Do me a favor and leave it to Webster to define

I aint hip hop, but I listen to it, musically persue it, working as a conduit

You got my point right, I'm thru wit it.

The word 'real' can be vague and is not very descriptive, maybe terms like traditional Hip-Hop or something to that effect. But what Mr. Messenger said about the original messages (intentions) of Hip-Hop Culture and Music is what I believe is relevant and should be regarded as sacred to the Musical Art Form. We have a duty as Hip-Hoppers to enhance the original intentions still preserving it and making it better and more beneficial, because foreal foreal Hip-Hop was created by the urban black youth of america FOR the urban black youth all over the world. It has since extended to many culture. races and nationalities, which is great because they add their own flavor, but the intent should be the same as the fathers of Hip-Hop- For Fun, partying, upliftment, FRIENDLY competition, Speaking about the traps and tribulations that can happen in the streets and growing up in this world, along with millions of other topics, but all based on information knowledge that can benefit the youth, because thats who's listening!

Recommendations for Today's Rappers to do more of (if the shoe fits)

instead of rapping about shooting niggas, rap about how to avoid shooting niggas.

instead of telling us how much your a pimp, tell us how WE can be pimps and PIMP this economic world to make more money for our ourselves and our families.

instead of rapping about going to jail, tell us how WE can survive in jail.

instead of talking about how many guns you have, tell us how to apply for gun licenses so we can legally protect ourselves in case of extreme emergencies.

instead of talking about fucking bitches, tell us how to find a true Queen who will do far more than just fuck us.

These are just some examples I think you get the point.

Well, This is just My opinion!!! that's it!

Well, Them Cats R real nice, but Hip Hop is not always Happy & positive! This culture was derived out of the ghettos and slums of urban life...So Cats like Kool G. Rapp, Large Professor, Fat Joe, The whole D.I.T.C. {including BIG L.}, Gangstarr, Rahkim, ect... Are Raw and still plugged to the steets! Some would classify them as thug emcee, but they are some of the illest and happen to be some of the pioneers of this culture! tALIB AND THE OTHERS u MENTIONED ARE ALL :D EMCEES and not everyone is all :D
They like the emcees U mentioned aren't gettin' the play either, they get more then some, but U gotta ask yourselves why? They "EMCEE" as Rahkim said "Move the Crowd" They know how to rock the crowd! Now So do Blackstarr, Common, ect....! But They incorporate a lot of Politics , Religion, Racial ethics in a sence....! Remember everyone has their own opinion and sometimes As Hip Hop Fans We just wanna Listen & we really don't wanna get into opinionated thoughts! We just wanna Bang or heads and marvel at their way of cleverly creating word schemes that we can relate to!!!!

Plus not to mention that this culture of ours is now commercialized ! Let's use the Game against itself to establish a more pure Art Form! In order to change the masives likes and dislike in regards to Hip Hop.....We need to make them "Fans" again!!!! Think about it!

Peace, Love ,& Hip Hop!

Architect, very good man,

It's people that stay this kind of stuff all the time, It just doesn't sell, as much

Real is what's real to that person listening to it,

I hate horror movies, and wrestling because its so fake to me.

But some people love that and will be like, " that real movie making"or "thats real entertainment"

You got to understand other people, its people that get a postive effect from listening to what would consider negative. Its people who never been out of they city and all they know is there hood, and the thug shit, so they like they music that way. I respect that.

You know what though,,,a lot of this "so called Hip Hop" these days is very violent. But lets face it,,,in this day and age, it's all about who's the hardest. Not even necessarily on recoeds but just in ya neiborhood alone. Feel me?

Plus, gangsta rap sells. But lets look at that,,,okay. We got one MC who's runnin his hood. Slingin drugs, actin all mafioso and he has a crew of 10 cats lets say. Now a "Gangsta" always keeps with "Gangstas" right,,so now you have 11 "Gangstas" in a hood. Now each of the 10 should have another 5 "Gangsta" friends that they cool with. Now if all these cats are "Gangstas" and don't care about killin other cats and the law....then all the hoods in the world would have one hard crew right? And then there would be no one left ecept women and children,,lol.

Seriously, the whole "Gangsta" image is totally wak. When MCees come out and talk what they see in the streets, thats real. These other MCees talkin that other violent stuff that they do(especially after reaching platinum status) is mad false. As I said above, not everybody can be "Gangsta" fo real and live in the same ghetto or boro,,cause then half of your favorite MCees wouldn't be here talkin all that yang man!

But basically,,,its the 4 elements and if you don't know the 4 elements, then you don't know Hip Hop.

Dog I agree with just about everything you said except for the fact that people dont realize, before hip hop is an art form its hope, its a way for ghetto youth who by any other means wouldnt have a chance to make it, make it. Other than that yall act like rappers are the ones that decide where hip hop goes, they dont. 70% of the album sells are done in suburban white america, they dont care to here an art form, they want to hear about shit that they aint never gonna see because they love to fantasize about livin the life of the have-nots. So these rappers gotta eat right? Thats the purpose for the gansta fasad. I dont like fake thugs either but I gotta except it as part of the game.

Word Up Fellas!!!! Very nice topic indeed, we are the future of Hip-Hop believe it or not, whether we go underground or commercial, we can help to change it back to the TRUTH neither always positive or negative, but speaking the absolute TRUTH about this world for our children to see. It's a gift to them.
